I had to replace both the power steering rack and pump on my 2001 GT. The pump had failed and the rack was leaking. It had basically zero power steering assist at idle or slow speeds.

Just remember you'll be needing an Alignment after you've replaced the steering rack. I would call around on prices for the rack and labor, plus alignment. If you can do it yourself you would save at least a couple hundred dollars or more depending on labor costs. Not sure if you guys have an alignment machine or not but alignments usually run like 50 and up at a shop.
