Hey guys, trying to replace the transmission in my 1998 grand prix GT, I've got EVERYTHING unbolted, the transmission is floating free, i'm running into clearance issues in the drivers side of the transmission. The chassis is preventing the transmission from falling all the way.... I must be missing something.... there has to be a way to remove the trans, without the engine....

LOL Did you drop the cradle??
Check the Power Steering rack...sometimes it gets caught up in there...but be VERY careful not to yank it out from the column area...or you'll be taking more time to re-align that with your steering wheel than doing a tranny swap 3 times.

You can also take a look at your dogbones. If they are aiming to the driverside..Push the motor to the passengerside.

no, i did not drop the cradle i'm just trying to get the transmission to fall.... but the transmission (on the drivers side) sticks out over the chassis preventing it from falling straight down... it does not seem like I have enough wiggle room to let it fall... i've tried to jack up the engine and its not helping... it seems to me I have to get a hoist and actually lift the engine up.... but I hope i'm wrong.... any thoughts guys?

You have to brace the engine from the top and drop the craddle
Its a bit of a pain but has to be done pop the balljoints and rack and pinion and powersteering cooler line from the cradle engine mount bolts on the passenger side trans mount on driver side theres some other stuff aswell but thats the basic stuff and the trans/engine mount on the pass side behind the oil pressure sensor

okay... so to drop the cradle there are 4 bolts....take off the bolts and all of the lines and everything....I already have everything off but the 4 bolts....
my question is once I take the bolts off I lower down the cradle with the transmission? or Do I brace the trans lower the cradle, remove the cradle then remove the transmission?
is that right?

Well...I'd have 2 people there to actually drop the cradle...and then have a transmission jack or a nice sized 2x4 on top of your jack holding the tranny up just to make sure it doesn't come on down WITH the cradle.

Definatly have a couple people to help
i droped the cradle with the trans held with a trans jack lowered the cradle down then the trans
Be prepared the cradle is a bit on the hefty side and once the bolt is out they drop quick
Its not that bad though with a lift I havent tried it with out one

Normally you want to drop the cradle before you unbolt the trans.

Yeah support the engine and trans from the top, drop the cradle, then put a trans jack under trans unbolt it drop it out.

okay got the cradle down.... going to try and re-install the replacement today... ill let you guys know how it goes...

Congratulations on getting the old transmission out. Most of the re-install is simply reverse of what you already did - still a big job but you've done it once so you can do it again. One tip you need to follow: Make sure the torque converter is completely seated on the input shaft. This is not hard to do. You just giggle and slightly rotate the torque converter while gently pushing it into the transmission. Eventually it will be pushed all the way back into the transmission with a satifying thud.

I like installing the TQ. Converter like a kick in the nuts.

Just remember that if the torque converter isn't installed correctly it will kick you in the nuts.

Yeah, but I'd be willing to bet ANYONE with a decent amount of vision and sense of TOUCH can put it on right

yea its something you definatly feel lock into place when i did mine my whole team took it out and snapped it it just so we all knew what it felt like

i didnt bother to read all the comments just saying ive changed many of them out easiest way is to drop the cradle its not too heavy either i got it by myself so save yourself some time and drop it
