I just bought this 2002 GT and the temp gauge doesn't work the 1st logical thing to do is make sure the wire is hooked up to the sender, I can't seem to locate it, any body help? also the cup holder is broken and I am going to order a repalcement, is there any installation instructions any where in the forums I tried searching and came up empty.

For your cup holder, Im not going to be much help. It would be nice if you run across something in the way of installation instructions to let us know. Or if you want to take pics and do a write up yourself, that would be great too.
For the temperature sender.
Stand in front of your car, hood open (obviously). Look to your right and you will see the upper radiator hose. Trace that hose to the engine and it will be clamped to the thermostat housing. Once there, look directly under the thermostat housing and you should see a brass looking thing with a plug on it, 2 wire plug. That is you coolant temperature sending unit. Costs maybe $15 to replace.
I just replaced my boss's temperature sender in his Bonneville and its and easy thing to do. Just be sure to use some plumbers tape on the threads to seal them up real good. Obviously this is something you want to do after everything has cooled down too.

Thanks I will try that, as for the cup holder its some kind of chinese puzzel if I can figure it out I will post pictures.

Nope SynthiceSheild the sensor your refering to is the cts coolant temp sensor. The sensor for the gauge it self should be in the rear head. Your facing the front if the car look for a single green wire it should be in the corner of the head clostest to the drivers side of the car. It takes a 15mm wrench or socket to get it out.. That its about 20-25 ish for the sensor. The coolant temp sensor is between 20-50 bucks and it takes a 3/4 or a 19mm wrench to remove.. Hope that helps

My car is a 2002 GT I think I found it in between the exhaust pipe and the engine, its in a very tight spot and I would need an extra elbow to get it out. just getting my hand in there to check the connection was hard, I think I will take in and have it done. Last time I worked on a car it was 1976 all I did was pass the wrenchs and open the beer.

Negative. Stick to your 3.1.....you've obviously never opened the hood of a 3.8 series 2 before.
Scotty is correct, it's under the thermostat housing on the drivers side of the intake. That is the ONLY temp sensor for the engine. It feeds the PCM, and the PCM is what feeds info to the cluster.

for the cup holder, that hole center peice usualy gets replaced,

The whole peice comes out pretty easy:
Engine off, Put gearshift into 2nd gear, then remove the liner from the center storage bin, then pull up on the center console top peice, starting at the storage bin and working forward, the cupholders should be folded out for this...
Oh, and if you have heated seats the switch and plate need to be lifted up an either detached or find a way to squeez it through the hole. ( i found a quarter is perfect to pop up this switch plate, weird huh)

Scott or whatever his name is not correct. I've pulled to many of these engines that its not funny and the sender for the gauge is on the rear head its like that the l36 L67 and the 60v6 engine. So untill i see a picture of the cts sensor and the temp sensor i am going by what i know what what i've seen

I had just checked my GT(wasnt sure of that one), GTP I know doesnt have anything in the heads. all the wholes in the heads do not go through to the coolant passages. they are threaded and used for accessory brackets.
the only sensor for the entire coolant system is under the Tstat housing.

i'm going to have to side with everyone else in this thread, my friend. the factory service manul info does NOT indicate a second temp sensor specifically for the gauge... in the 3800 series. now, in the 3.4 motor that you so unabashedly adore.. yes there is a sparate sensor. so yes, please post a picture of what you are reffering to.

You're comparing apples to oranges. The only thing a 60*v6 has in common with the 90* is the number of cylinders. The sensors aren't in the same place, they don't even share the same type of sensors. There's only ONE sensor on the back of the engine, and that's the rear knock sensor. Now take your bad advice, get your Chilton's manual and go study some more. You'd have this poor bastard checking the gas tank if it were up to you.

I am really going to have to agree with everyone else here and ask that you take a picture of the sensor you are referring to. If there is an additional coolant sensor on the 3800 engine separate from the one below the T-stat housing I will publicly apologize right here for calling you out on it. But until then I will anxiously await photographic proof or some type of factory documentation of this in a 3800 engine.

I must agree with the majority here....but not because they are the majority, but because they are right. The coolant temp sensor is exactly where Scotty explained it to be. Follow the upper radiator hose, and it is below the t-stat housing in the LIM. No other exists. Not in the heads, nowhere. Maybe on 60° engines. But not the L36 or L67.
Check your info.
