I put on a K&N air intake on my 99 gp gt about two days ago went on perfect, no problems (plus I reset the PCM and been driving without my lead foot) but on the way to school (35min drive) the "service engine soon" light came on. Im guessing its because of the new intake but dont know why or what i should do?

PS ive had the car for two years put on 15K miles never had a problem

check and clean your MAF sensor. if there was too much oil on your K&N filter, that can trip the SES light. also, double check all of the connections for the intake. dont want any leaks...

First thing you should do is find out why the code was set. I can sit here and tell you it could be this or it could be that. But I have no idea until you find how what code set the light to go off. Just take your car to an AutoZone or some place like that, have them scan the car, and they can tell you what is wrong. Make sure you get the exact code...not just a general description of it. You need to know the number.

But my guess is that the air filter is over oiled and you are getting a MAF code and your MAF simply needs cleaned....or it could be totally unrelated to the intake install.

Zef meant your AIR filter is over oiled, but he is right, its really a guessing game until we know what the code is. At that point we can have you check a couple of things to narrow it down.

Here is a list of codes that will cause the check engine light to come on...

im thinking about putting a cone filter on mine but i wont have to worry about this problem , my ses light has been on for 5,000 miles lollol...... i would agree , these guys are the most helpful bunch , but gotta give them something to work with , and with out a code its throwing parts and money at it.

I found out the number its PO172 they said it has something to do with the "fuel trim in bank one condition"
"THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE USE THE O2 SENSOR TO CALCULATE THE AIR/FUEL RATIO OF THE ENGINE. THE COMPUTER HAS RECOGNIZED A RICH OR LEAN CONDITION ON ONE ENGINE BANK ONLY."
-thats what the paper told me, now what should i do from here?

    read here:

OBD-II Trouble Code: P0172 System Too Rich (Bank 1)

just to eliminate your k&n as source of problem, i'd clean the MAF, and toss on the stock airbox, and clear the code. run it for a few days and see how it does.

Well, since we only have one O2 sensor for both cylinder banks, lets see what the issues could be.

Could be a dirty MAF sensor. A vacuum leak somewhere or possibly a bad fuel pressure regulator. It could be an issue with one or more of the fuel injectors.

Given that you just put on a K&N filter I will have to go with the others on this one and say you probably have a dirty MAF sensor and need to clean it and keep some spare cleaner around just in case.

you didnt put any on the K&N, the factory did. sometimes they can have too much oil on them from the factory. happens occasionally

They come pre-oiled, and sometimes over oiled. Pick up a can of MAF cleaner at the local parts store, spray down the sensor, and see if it helps.
