Had a check engine light on and so I went to the auto store and they said that the code is showing a EVAP leak. Is that an easy cheap fix? My information screen does say on occasion to check gas cap. The auto parts guy suggested to WD40 the gas cap gasket and to scotch bright around the gas port (it had some surface rust on it)

    Any other suggestions?

if its the p0455 code, thats a large leak. if your in the rust belt look under the car where the gas fill tube is, theres the fat gas in tube, then a smaller vent one. mine rusted out causing that code. you can also look for busted plastic lines to and from the evap solenoid under the hood.

evap purge solenoid (under hood, typically on the egr bracket, hose goes to just behind the throttle body) is closed until commanded open. it's easy to test.

disconnect the purge valve connector, let the car run, and take off the hose that goes to the tank. if you have vacuum coming out of the purge valve, it is stuck open and will cause an evap code and sometimes a lean code (P0171) as well.

aside from that and visually inspecting the gas cap seal, it's hard to determine without having access to the undercarriage or a smoke machine.

could also be pinholes from rust in the gas filler neck
agree with above, a smoke machine is really what's needed to find the small leaks

I had the same code I believe on my '06. I pulled the driver rear wheel well liner and saw that the purge cannister was bloated and cracked. For me, that made troubleshooting really easy. Might want to check it out.
