Hey y'all I've got an 02 that's been sitting for roughly 5 months. I went to start it and the battery was dead so I slapped a new one in and now it will start and run for about .8 seconds and shut itself off. If I get on the gas I can keep it running but barely. It won't go over 4k and it sounds like it's missing. I did find a short in the #2 plug wire so I changed the ICM, all of the coil packs, ignition wires and plugs. But none of that helped. I checked the fuel pressure and it's fine so the pump and filter are ok. Also i hook up a code reader to erase codes and I can't get a connection to the engine. And to top all of that off when I keep the accelerator down the exhaust smells like gunpowder. I NEED HELP

I also did some reading and saw a lot of things saying it could be the cat and I don't much care if it's loud so I cleaned out the cat and still nothing

Check the cigarette lighter fuse. Believe this is tied to the OBD port as well. Also check fuse #21 (i think). This should be for the MAF sensor. If you're trying to rev it that high in park its likely hitting the rev limiter.

Just put the old ICM back in and now I have connection to the engine but imm not getting any codes and it still won't run. I have a security light flashing. And I know my dad's Denali had issues with the security shutting the car off so I wondered about that but I wouldn't be able to keep it running if that were the case right?

Does the Check Engine Light in the cluster light up at startup? If not, then a blown bulb can throw that code. Also, check ALL the grounds, especially the one under the ICM. Make sure they and both battery termianls are clean and tight. I've had a loose battery cable cause strange things like this.

Do you have another key to try?

key off unplug the maf sensor. then try to start it up.

defiantly on the rev limiter in park revving it.

like ford said. key to on, the cel on? if not the clusters bulb is out.

scanner can connect is the fuse like ford also said up there. power port fuse, no idea wtf # it is.

did you say pcm swap? or icm. think i seen both. pcm swap you need to do a security learn if you changed the pcm. key to run for 10 minutes, then off for less then 10 seconds, repeat 2 more times, 4 th turn of the key it should crank and run.

Where does it ground on the ICM? It's definitely grounding at the battery I made sure of that. And I can't try another key the one in it is snapped off in the ignition cylinder. It's been like that since I bought it 7 years ago

icm ground is on its harness, not directly on the icm.

yes you can swap the pcm. if you have a dead key then you need to do that security learn deal. you got a 50/50 shot it will just crank and run off it. if the osid # for the OS is the same it will. but you really have no way of seeing that.

check your fuel pressure too. or at least hit the valve on the fuel rail. key on, gas should spray out with force, no pressure and nothing or very little will come out.

id take your brothers dash cluster too. as long as his cel light come on when the key is to run, solves that issue.

swap his maf in there too. check that fuse 21 iirc is good, thats the maf's fuse.

The ground on the ICM attaches to one of the studs that holds the ICM mounting bracket to the head. Small black wire with a toothed ring terminal end on it. Should come out of the harness that also connects to the ICM itself.

What are the chances it could be a cam pos sensor or crank pos sensor?
