Hey all. Hopefully you can help me. I have recently started hearing a noise from the font end of my car. It's kind if hard to explain the noise. I'm do my best. It's kind of like a hum that winds up as I go faster, and down when I slow down. It almost sounds like when you put a card in a bike wheel, in the sense that it's kind of a slow and deep noise at first, but as I accelerate, it gets faster and higher pitched. It's definitely not an engine noise. It's also not a bad hub, as I changed them out recently.

    Things I have checked:
I checked the hubs by jacking it up and looking for play. Good there. I also put the car on stands, turned her on and gave it gas to turn the wheels, in neutral. I don't hear the noise from the wheels, it seems to be coming from somewhere between the wheels, under the car.

Any help? What can I check? How can I check it. Etc. I don't like taking it to the shop if I can do it. Thanks.

even if there's no play, the hub bearing could still be making noise. Does the noise change going around a corner? For example if the left hub bearing is going, it will get quieter on a right turn because the left hub will get loaded with weight transfer.

or maybe a tire has a bad belt. try swapping tires front to back and see if the noise move

Grab the coil spring on the strut while you spin the tire by hand, you'll feel the vibration through the spring and find the bad bearing.

As I said in the post, the sound is not coming from the wheel or the hub. I know what sound a bad bearing makes, and that turning the wheels can help determine. So what else can it be, besides the bearings.

About the tires, it still made the noise while it was jacked up so I don't think it is the tire, but I'll rotate them anyway.

    Axle?

    Input shaft?

    Control Arm?

I'm just naming anything that moves there.

Even if new hubs, if you mis-torqued you can have bearing issues. Also there is guarantee that bearings will make noise a specific way when turning. Proper torque on axle nuts is critical. I know some say just hit it with impact but honestly I have had several get damaged just that way with too tight or too loose.

I torqued both nuts to specs. Also, the noise is not coming from the tires. I jacked the car up, put the car in neutral and had a friend slightly give it gas. Just enough for noise to start. And it is coming from under the car, between the wheels. Not sure exactly where, but definitely not the wheels.

Well, inbetween the wheels is the transmission. That is likely where the noise is then.

Maybe you're low on fluid and you hear the trans pump.

The sound was similar to bad cv joints. My friend mentioned it. I changed them, but no go.

My engine has quite a bit of play. Could that be causing the clicking noise? Would I be able to hear that?

You sure it isn't the power steering pump you are hearing?
