I've been chasing a random misfire that started abruptly two weeks ago. No codes, but at random intervals the car will miss; basically causes the whole car to stumble. It will happen at idle, normal driving, or hard acceleration. I've changed plugs and ignition coils, and wires are fairly new (5 months). I'm thinking about replacing the ICM, but before I throw parts at it I thought I'd see if anyone has had the same issue in the past. Fuel pump seems fine, and fuel pressure regulatior is 4 months old so it should be good. I assume the injectors are good, but I don't really have any way to test them. Any advice is appreciated.

Does it seem to do it more when hot?

It will happen when the engine is hot or cold. Temperature doesn't seem to affect the frequency of the misfire either.

Well, if you suspect the ICM I could snag the one off my 00 GT and you could try it out and see if it goes away. As long as I get it back, lol. It's going to be sitting for a bit since I blew out the pass. rear brake line this Friday. Didn't have any issues that I'm aware but I can scan the car to make sure before I rip it out of there. Could meet you at work and just change it out right there if need be.

Ok, sounds good. I'll go out and scan it now and if it shows up clean I'll remove it and keep it with me until we can meet up.

Well sh*t. Just scanned it and had a P0300 Random misfire code that I wasn't aware of due to the burnt out MIL light in the dash. Could be wires/plugs but I don't want to complicate the troubleshooting. I'll scan my Bonneville tomorrow and see if that one comes back clean. If so I'll pull the ICM from it and put the one from the GP onto the Bonne as I need to drive that one still. I'll PM you tomorrow once I get a chance to check everything out.

most auto parts places can scan the ICMs to tell if they're bad or not, that's how I confirmed mine was bad. Although you do have to remove the ICM and bring it into the store, only downside of having this done.

Thanks robinsone, I didn't realize that was an option. I'll pull mine and take it up there. Fordman77, I'll swing up and have them check the ICM, but I appreciate your offer to loan me yours. I'll post here to document weather the ICM was the cause of the misfire or not.

No problem. Now I guess on top of the blown rear brake line I get to chase down a P0300 of my own.
