So I bought a 01 GT, previous owner said the transmission was rebuilt 25k miles ago (can believe it, shifts like a dream). When the car has been sitting, I can crank it, and I hear nothing. Sounds good. I was driving it in warmer weather and it had an awful knocking sound, but what has me confused is whenever it is cool out, I can drive it about 4 miles and nothing, just hear the sound of the motor. If I turn it off, crank back up, with every stop, once I take off again, you hear a slight knock, which with a few stop signs later, take off has to be super slow because it's knocking like crazy.
The motor has to get really warm before it gets full on knocking. My dad has been a mechanic for 20 years, and said it also has him sort of stumped as he said every rod knock he has heard started as soon as the car was cranked up, and my last GP had a lifter ticking, which also started off the bat, but with warmer engine temps got better.
I am completely at a loss. I bought the car for a mere $1300 because the trim on the door and below the door is gone (door trim) and broken (below door). I expected something to 'pop' up as the car has new front struts, tie rod ends, and had a recent alignment. Inside was really great condition, but I would rather it have been something I could easily diagnose.
