Thread: 96 GTP tuneup cost?

Now is probably a good time to learn. All of that stuff is relatively easy. The wires can be tough to get to in the rear but there are some tricks to getting at them like using a ratchet strap to pull the engine forward. I'm not sure that you'd need new coil packs unless yours weren't functioning. Plugs and wires, oil and the filters is a good idea though. Probably ~$100 for all of that in parts? Depending on what kind of oil you get.

Should add, it's probably not a bad idea to replace all of the vacuum lines if your up for it.

Before you do any of that. Pull that front plastic cover. 2 8mm bolts. And check your timing belt.If it looks worn or damaged in anyway get that replaced. Not the easiest thing to do for a beginner, but it's something that needs to be done.

As for the rest of that stuff it's all pretty basic.

Spark plugs are easy to do on this engine. Coil pack I wouldn't change it's not bad.

The fuel filter. That's easy to do and probably worth it. Air filter easy.

Yeah I pulled the code for random/multiple misfires. I figure it'd cover more ground to replace those as well. I also have a problem where when I punch the gas and let off, the RPM stays high/hangs and won't drop very fast. Error codes weren't too helpful in figuring out what that was

Change all your plugs first. If there's still a problem then get new wires.

OK from a long time DOHC guru, here is what i would do.

first how many miles on the car? you say it hasnt had any real service in 5 years? what is the owner ship history of the car?

1) Plugs and wires.
Plugs: the stock plug heat range is a autolite 605. but all these engines run lean. so you should replace with autolite 104's gapped at .047"
Wires: cheap autozone wires lasted me 5+ years and never had any issues.

2) Oil: 5w30 is stock and it uses 5.5 quarts. i used castrol syntec for 7 years and started using it at 120,000miles

3) Fuel filter: these can rust on to the car pretty hard. make sure to have clamping pliers to grip the old filter and a good quality wrench to not strip the fuel line. also i have seen where sediment builds up in the fuel pressure regulator. use hog ring pliers and remove the fpr. then there is a screen that will come out and you can get the sediment out.

4)Timing belt: the service interval for the timing belt is every 75,000 miles. like said above to inspect it take the front cover off and look at it. you should not see any threads on it and it should be about 2.5" wide. your average shop will charge $1000.00 to do the job! and it requires special tools to do properly. there is a complete write up on the job at 60degreev6.com with pictures and all the tools needed. parts alone to do the job is about $300.00

5) Vacuum leaks: this is what plagues these engines most.
-Lower Intake Gaskets: these are a common leak and will cause you to loose coolant and cause a big vac leak. this job is much easier then doing a LIM on a 3800 engine.
-TB and Intermediate Arm gaskets.
-vac lines esp the T on the throttle body crack and leak.

6) as for fuel i also recommend 89 as again these engine tend to run lean.

where are you located? there may be myself or another person near that could help. also if you want more power i have a tuned pcm for it and can modify it for your needs.
