I have a 98 grand prix se 3.1 L V6. Recently the intake manifold and head gaskets blew. I have replaced both and a few parts that were worn or I broke during the process. After reassembling the motor I cannot get her to start. Ive checked for fuel, spark, and the starter.. all are good. What else could be the cause? Keep in mind that I have never done a fix of this size. Just recently got into working on cars. any help would be appreciated.

Yeah it cranks but wont turn over. Only a back fire every so often. And yes the firing order is correct. Could it be jumped timing?

Cylinder 1 is on the rear, so 1,3,5. Not saying you are wrong but alot of people think it's like a 3800 were cylinder 1 is on the front bank.

It's a timing chain motor, very very unlikely that it jumped time. It would have snapped the chain if anything.

Ok. Yeah. I know 1 3 5 is on the back. The backfire is coming from under the hood for sure.

Would the pistons still move if the chain is broken?

pistons sill move, broken chain, the rockers would stop moving.

Rockers move for sure. Could the spark plug gap cause it to not turn over? Like I said, im new to this and learning as I go. And I really appreciate all your Input

The camshaft position sensor is the problem I think.. the wires are exposed.

id double check all your plugs are back where they belong, re check the plug wires for sure.

did you check for spark and saw spark? and theres fuel to the rail too you said right?

that will do it. you can take that pig tail off cut the wires off and solder in new wire. you need to cut back the old wire till you get to clean shinny copper wire. dont try to solder to dirty tarnished wire, it wont solder well at all.

if theres not enough wire to solder to you can buy a new pig tail for it and solder that on.

Calling it a night. It still wont turn over. Double checked plugs and wires. All sparked. The number 5 wire when I pulled it out the connector was still on the plug not in the wire. Still got spark though.
    BACK STORY.
It had been overheating for a while. To the point it would shut down before I could pull safely off the road. When it finally died the last time there was oil and coolant mix all over the motor. Thats what led to me replacing the gaskets.

Welp, other things off hand I'd do it unplug the MAF and try starting it.

Spraying brake cleaner down the throttle body and see if it will start with a boost from that.

    Double check all IGN fuses.

Ive tried spraying starter fluid into the air flow. Got nothing. What would unplugging the MAP do?.

if it dont fire up with starting fluid sprayed in the tb, its a spark problem of some kind.

its the maf you would unplug. some times a bad maf can do this. unplugging it put the car in closed loop, aka pre set setting the engine runs off of.
