So I scoured the forums for anyone that has had or heard of this. My sons '98 Grand Prix with a 3.1L started leaking antifreeze behind the engine, can't see where from on top, but it is leaking from what it looks like behind the engine and firewall. Now the overflow tank does loose the antifreeze. So I refill it. The temp gauge hardly moves. Gets warm, no over heating. No antifreeze in the oil either. No "milk shake" on the oil stick or under oil fill cap. No "burning" antifreeze either. So is there a antifreeze line running down low along the firewall that could be leaking?
    Thank you,
    Patrick

Is it your heater core? Look for the lines that lead THROUGH the firewall to the heater core. I had a '97 Grand Am GT with the 3100, and one of the connections on my heater core blew up, and it looked like I had a faucet under my car. Sounds like your leak is significantly slower than that, but I'd check the lines to/from your heater core.

    Loopy,
Thank you for the reply. I cannot believe I didn't think of that!!! I will have to take a mirror and see if I can see the lines. Or raise the whole car and see if I can see them from underneath. I will let you know what I found out. Thank you again for the reply.

    dsmuts,
That is a good idea to check that. I will be looking at the heater core lines from loopy's suggestion and I will look at those as well. I will let you know what I find. Thank you again for the reply.

I've had this happen on my 3.1 grand am. Suspected heater core, actually was a rubber hose from motor to firewall that's for the heater core, noticed the 2 hoses back there had never been replaced and were in very bad condition. After replacing them I now understand why noone replaces them till they blow. But the 3100 is a compact motor and the gp's have a much larger engine bay than the grand ams. A 12 pack, a buddy to help drink the twelve pack, and an hour on a Saturday afternoon should do the trick to replace those things. I always start with the easier cheaper simple things and cross my fingers before getting into something as labor intensive as a heater core. If they're screw clamps get some of those super long screw drivers and if they're the type you pinch together to release get a long set of needle nose. You'll probably find that having access underneeth and on top will be neccesary. Remove the hood if you need to. Goodluck!
