My 94 Grand Prix has an intermittent issue with not wanting to turn over to start.
When you turn the key you can hear it click at the starter but it will not engauge the starter.
I have a new battery and also replaced the starter and it still does the same thing.
I removed and re-grounded the ground wires under the hood and still the same. I also removed the switch on the steering shaft that the rod works in and out from the key switch. opened it up and checked all of the contacts and put it back together and still the same thing.
My keys have a security chip and I have tried both keys and still the same. Voltage is good.
    Neutral safety switch going bad???
I have a relay for an anti-theft security switch that I got from NAPA but I have not found this on my car. Mine might not have this relay. The manual is showing an Anti-theft fuse which would only work or not and wouldn't be intermittent.
I'm hoping it's not the key switch because of the security. I'm really puzzled that if it's the key switch why would it click like it's trying to start.
When it does start, in some cases, it seems to have a short delay before it cranks.
This is a tough one to track down. I build race cars on the side and I hate it when a problem like this is occuring.
Has anyone had anything like this happen with their Pontiac???

does the "Security" light goes off after you turn the key?
    if so- it`s o.k.
have you tried to clean the contacts at the starter? (the battery + that goes to the solenoid & starter). check if the wires o.k.
sounds like your starter dosen`t get enough amps.

The security light goes out and I have tried both keys so I don't think this is an issue now.
I was leaning toward a vlotage/amp issue and tested it at the starter and it was fine. However, I was testing it when it was starting so I might have to catch it when it's just clicking the solenoid.
It has been starting fine lately and I have been aggressive with the key switch. I've been taking the key and turning it as far forward as I can and doing this fast.
I'm leaning toward the switch on the column that is activated with the rod from the key switch. It has a slight adjustment on the column and I have had this apart.
I looked at the contacts and springs and everything appeared ok but this could still have wear that is hard to detect. It could have a spring that is weak or a contact not making a connection at all times.
My next move is to find a new switch and replace it. AMXTRA

Check the neutral safety switch. Try starting it in neutral instead of park.

If I was an expert on anything automotive, it wouldn't be trannys...lol
I'm just guessing on this, does anyone know if the switch is electronic or if it is based off of the linkage position?
