    Hey guys,

My mom owns a 95 GP SE 3.1 and has been having an issue for quite a while. It has happened like 3 or 4 times in the last 6 months maybe. She claims the car stalls randomly, when pulling into parking lots or backing up. I got it to happen once when backing up and didn't notice anything weird. It was like I had just turned the key off. No revs or anything, just complete kill. No lights on the dash other than the usual when you've turned off the engine.

The car seems to run fine, no power loss, no fluctuations in RPMs.

She did have an instance where it was completely dead, but I'm pretty sure it's dirty battery cables, cuz I just wiggled them (I'll get to cleaning) and it was fine. This wouldn't cause it to kill though since it should have enough power from the alternator.

Any thoughts on which path to go down? I'm starting to think air intake problem, or fuel intake problem.

Can you check the VCM for any stored codes? Not everything throws a CEL.

Unfotunately I don't have a scanner...could possibly buy one, but I'd be new to using one. I'm open to almost anything though.

Typically, you can go to any Autozone and they will scan your car for free.

You could buy a scan tool, but it's not worth it unless you've got a lot of vehicles to work on.

It last stalled last week. Would it still have the problem code stored after that amount of time?

I believe it takes 40 drive cycles to clear a CEL, but I believe the code stays in the VCM until it gets cleared out via battery disconnection or scan tool clearing it.

Ok thanks for the advice. I'll try that. I'm sure I'll be back once I've got, or not gotten any info.

No problem. BTW, how old are the battery and the battery cables on the car? Might want to replace them.

She's had the car for going on 5 years I think and its never been replaced. So yea it needs a new one lol. Haven't had any issues starting in the winter but I was planning to do some changes for her this summer including battery, plugs and wires.

Sounds like a tune-up is very needed.
