Rebuilt trans: New noise

So got the car back from the shop from having the trans rebuilt (including a reman converter) I've got a new noise.

I could best describe it as a faint hollow knock. Faint enough that most average car owners wouldn't notice it. But I'm OCD and hear everything. In fact at first I was paranoid it was coming from the oil pan, but after unbolting the torque converter proves it's in the trans.

It most noticable when the car is up to temp, and is worse in gear vs in park. If you blip the throttle you can hear there is a slight lag as it slows down slower than the engine rpm.
So, I'm going to call the shop in the morning but sound like the converter or something in the trans?

Maybe the flex plate is cracked.

I've had that happen before. Not that nearly that loud. It's a pretty faint, hollow sound that I'll try to get on video in the morning.

For some reason my gut tells me it's in the torque converter.

Tried to get a quick video before work this morning. There's a lot of background noise that the phone picks up, but you can hear a bit better once I put it in gear. The more I listen to it, the more it reminds me of the noise of a bearing going bad.

If you are hearing it out of gear, then the converter is the only other thing turning.

Well I got it back from the shop again yesterday. He said he can hear it, but doesn't sound like anything to be concerned about. Said it doesn't sound like its coming from the converter, maybe a chain on a new sprocket.

That doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies. Especially with a couple roadtrips coming up in the next few weeks.

(On a side note what do you see for trans temps on normal driving with these cars? Mid 80's outside. I never paid close attention before the rebuild but I'm seeing up to 220 which seems very high)

You better add a trans cooler 220 is high...

And better take it back yea it might be a noise that you don't need to be concerned with but you paid for a proper rebuilt and you shouldn't have to live with hearing that noise and dealing with it.. Of course guy doesn't exactly seemed thrilled to pull the trans out and apart again but that's what a warranty is for to bad sometimes you have to triple check and redo your work.

It was just back and they had it for a day. He tells me he wouldn't hesitate to take it on a trip and feels the noise isn't anything to be concerned with.

Witg a long screwdriver on the trans case you can actually feel the vibration that goes along with the noise and it feels like it may be a bit deeper in the case than the converter.

Also found some old scans. My temps were in the 210 range on a hot day then too.

Not a dumb question. Lots of times folks miss the simple things.

So I've put about 500 miles on this transmission with the noise including a 270mi trip yesterday. Noise is still there and not really getting any worse.

But I'm still having a really hard time trusting it, especially to make a 10 hour trip here in a few weeks.

I know you said nothing should be spinning inside the trans in park, but is the pump still turning? The sound is definitely coming from deeper in the case than the torque converter I think now.
