Been ordering mods for my car lately. 3.4 pulley, headers, and an overkill tune. 1.9's will be going in shortly afterward. And hopefully an IC with a smaller pulley. So of course I'll be needing some transmission work done after all that pretty soon. So would I be better off finding a junkyard transmission for $300-$400 and buying a really good rebuild kit for it or just buy a new transmission altogether and sinking about $2500 or more into it? I know a guy thats builds transmissions for a living. If I bought a used one and bought all the aftermarket HD internals and what not he'll rebuild it for about $350. So which am I better off doing?

JY trans and rebuild it with 300m input shaft, 7/8s chain etc.

Questions come up of ...what does he know, what does he do in a rebuild etc etc

4T65's benefit from not just loading clutches and calling it a day. There's a few things to do in the VB/CP that make large differences.

You might be better off ordering a trans from TEP and having the additional parts put into it.

I bought a TEP stage 2 kit and had a TEP VB and CP made, used those along with a GMR 1in chain, GMR Input Shaft. Chomaly pump shaft, PI 3000 stall converter, and an LSD for a DIY build. It can be done but it depends on how well you trust this guy with lots of money lol

This. IF your guy doesn't know 4t65's super well. If He does know them and know all the solenoids and other things they like replaced, then cool beans.

Well for a lot of the upgrades you need the reaming kit. $500 alone just in tooling.

Dude. Not everyone needs a gmr setup... he just went to a 3.4 pulley lol. Just saying you don't need to recomend gmr stuff to everyone.. yes its good but for his car it wouldn't make sense. 7/8s or v8 spec chain and 300 m would hold his power just fine.

Do I need to remember how far you went on stock trans? lol

So they don't make a rebuild kit with all this **** already in it? The guy knows transmissions very well. It's what he does for a living. Mainly transmissions for drag cars though. But he may not know all the tips and tricks when it comes to one of these transmissions. There's not another modded GTP in my area. I'm almost certain. And if he's ever done transmission work to one he probably just put a stock one back in. I was wanting to get a cheap junkyard tranny for $200-$300 and buy a really good heavy duty rebuild kit and whatever additional parts you guys recommended. I guess it's not that simple though huh?

Nah..typical rebuild kits will have the standard number of clutches, master kits will include the seals (upgraded typically), the transgo shift kit will give you the accumulator and channel plate parts for shift kit. Then there's a pile of boost fixes, other valves etc. If you read on further.. feed hole enlargement, plenty of other tricks. That's all before you get to wanting a 300M input shaft, maybe a different stall TC or any of the usuals.

Take a read on tripleedgeperformance.com at some of the various things he has listed.

Oh well. Guess I'll buy one already built then. Because I'm planning on doing a lot more to it by next summer. Intercooler, ported/worked heads and a smaller pulley. Maybe a ported Gen V but IDK about the Gen V just yet. I'll have to research that part and see if the swaps really worth it before I do so.

Gen V is definitely worth it for the money. The swap is cheap and easy.

What kinda HP gains are we talking for a ported Gen V? On a car with 1.9's, Speed daddys, and possibly intercooled. I know theres way too many variables to be completely accurate. Just looking for a ball park estimate.

Very hard to say, I know my friend with Plog and rockers went from 3.4 on a gen 3 to 3.6 on a gen v and picked up around 20 whp, and was able to drop to the 3.4 with no knock, didn't dyno again until much later. But it makes cooler boost, and more of it, on a bigger pulley, less parasitic loss and a wider power band, and a lot more torque low down usually.
