    Hi,

I recently had issues with my car being stuck in limp mode due to the harness being broken. I fixed that issue (I'm skipping a lot to make a long story short) however I had to reopen the side cover to fix the TCC because I didn't clip it in correctly. I wasn't aware you were suppose to take the cover off to clip it in. I went ahead and did that, put the pump back on, and everything back together. When I started the car it would not move at all. No gears, not engaging. I checked the dip stick, tranny fluid is really high on the stick which would mean it's not pumping through the transmisssion. So I guessed that I put the pump back on incorrectly. I reopened the side cover and found that the ring that's inside the cover was all chipped up which wasn't allowing the pump to move. The shaft looked fine, however I was able to easily rotate it to the right like it wasn't catching on the torque converter. Now if I rotate it to the left while applying pressure toward the transmission I'm unable to rotate it, like it's catching on the torque converter. My question is, is that normal? Do you think I stripped the torque converter? Do you think I simply need a new ring for the pump body?I attached some pictures of the pump shaft and beat up ring

Dude.. you snapped the shaft clean off.

Here's one under the chain. See how long it should be at the splined area.

This one has a broken input shaft, but you can again see the length of the splines

I'd try to go through the hole with a small magnet stick and see if you can retrieve it. If not, the trans comes out and either new converter or getting piece out. I'd say when you put it back together, the pump was somehow bound on the shaft and that caused the snap.

BTW pump shaft in an 04+ is different than 97-02
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Yes, I noticed that after I posted this and did some research on the shaft
I tried with a magnet to pull the broken piece out but was unsuccessful. This job I think is way out of my level of skill. I've never pulled a trans out, although I have the tools minus the proper jack. I'm thinking about putting it back together and towing it to a shop and explain to them what the problem is. How difficult is it pulling this trans out? It was a nightmare just to get the side cover off. What are the chances I stripped the torque converter? Considering the torque converter's grooves were strong enough to snap the shaft off in there, I'm guessing the grooves are probably fine. I may have a few more ideas on how to get this broken piece out.

    Thanks for the reply

By the way I have a 2000 Grand Prix SE

I find it easier to pull a trans than the side cover.

Damn, that's a new one on me, lol. I agree with Bill, it's easier and less frustrating to pull the transmission out than it is to pull the side cover...this coming from the guy that pulled the side cover something like 5 times before I pulled the transmission...lol.

    UPDATE:

I bought a pump shaft and pump from ebay for $40. I used the new pump shaft to "reach" the broken off piece with krazy clue at the tip. After 4 tries, it finally worked. Pulled the piece out and installed everything. Car is running great. A few more issues that I need to tackle, but I will be posting in the appropriate section in this forum. Thanks guys!
