Transmission temperature issue

I have one problem that scares the living **** out of me and that would be this trans temperature issue I've had for months and yesterday I drove it for 90min at about 70-80 (give or take) on the highway cruising and it got up to 235 !!!!

I've tried changing the fluid, filter and adding a trans cooler the only thing that did was make it take longer to get to a higher temp. Should I be preparing for my trans to take a dump? It shifts fine, even at high temps it doesn't even feel like there's a trans issue.

My current problems are a
bad hub
a sticky caliper
Axel
And a catilic converter

I highly doubt they can contribute to this issue but just in case ...

Extra info: I've noticed the side of my trans says 2005 impala and is crossed off and replaced with 2005 Grand Prix with junkyard marker so I know this is a used trans

With teh cooler you see 235? I'd be concerned.

Did you skip the cooler in the radiator and go strictly external? If not..I'm thinking there might be a blockage in the radiator.

I'd be concerned too. I'm not very knowledgeable but a few things cross my mind. Something could be plugged - has the filter been replaced? Could one of the metal lines inside the pan have fallen out? Could the temp sensor be misreading?

Has it gotten worse since you installed the standalone? Is the standalone cooler big enough to provide the correct amount of cooling?

Filter has been replaced

I didn't see a metal line in the trans pan

Temp sensor COULD be misreading but I'm not sure of a way to test that, I don't have access to a temp reader

The metal lines would have been up near the filter and I think they run in to the accumulator (which you wouldn't have messed with unless you were doing a shift kit). If you didn't touch them, they are probably fine. I'm not sure what kind of symptoms it would cause if any of those fell out of place.

Based on my understanding, that cooler is meant to run in series, to provide additional cooling after the radiator. I'm thinking the guys who run standalone use a larger cooler. This could be your problem?

If those metal lines were not in the correct positions.. the trans would not work properly.

Somewhere in these links or the manual is an ohm based temperature info

It's possible, what type of cooler should I have ?

Also I'd like to add this issue has been happening for months this isn't new, it's just the weathers getting hotter and I don't need a sudden trans explosion

Ok. Confirmed with Dan and we agree mine is a stand alone unit. The trans never got above the temp pictured below. 80* was at 11am. It got into the 90's a little later in the day, while driving on the hills of Ohio it stopped at 179*.

So Bill's has about 25% less capacity but is running about 50 degrees warmer. I think Bill has some issue other than his cooler size. I think I've offered all my useful knowledge :/

Also, since the heat was an issue before you did any sort of auxiliary cooler makes me think its a bigger issue...

But wouldn't my trans show some sort of symptom by now tho? It's been months, I'd think somthing would break by now, even when I dropped the pan every thing looked normal

Bill, I'm a little out of my league here but the fact that you aren't seeing any weird symptoms was the reason I thought your temp sensor could be misreading. I would talk to Dave from triple edge performance and see if he is willing to help you troubleshoot. I wouldn't write this off as a goofy sensor since the outcome of being wrong could be a ruined transmission. Hopefully some more knowledgeable people will chime in soon.

As a side note, when I used to tow motorcycles with my GP (before a cooler) I was seeing temps of up to 228* but I didn't have any unusual symptoms. I think I put on 5000-8000 miles towing them in temp ranges from 210 - 228*. I'm now at 105k miles and running strong. If nothing else, keep a close eye on your fluid and change it as soon as it doesn't look new or begins to smell burnt.

That's a good find, I've toyed with the idea that the dic might be displaying incorrectly

I've been searching If there's a way to test the temp of the trans to see if it's actually as hot as it says it is, and so far nothing relevant popped up .
