I recently swapped a lower miles engine in to my 02 gtp motor was from a 98 gtp. When you first cold start the car i hear this slight grinding sound coming from the bellhousing area. It will last for about 30 seconds and you can hear it fade away. The sound is gone for the rest of the time. Its really just that first 30 seconds upon a cold start. The car sat for about 6 months between getting the old motor out, finding a donor, and installing the newer motor.
I changed the transmission fluid and filter when i did the motor swap.
Someone i talked to said maybe that starter is sticking. But, like i said it only does this on a cold start.
Maybe a torque converter issue? I'll try and post a video of it later.

i took a video but it sucks. My phone was picking up all kinds of sounds. Its hard to tell what im talking about. But, its more like a minute thirty seconds of grinding before it stops from a cold start.

Check your flexplate for cracks and warping. If you can, make sure the bolts are tight.

Check for metal shavings in the bell housing.

Jack up the car SECURELY and have someone start it to see if you can see anything rubbing or the starter sticking.

Well i took the inspection cover off and checked all the converter bolts. They were tight. Flywheel looked crack free. No metal shavings in the bell housing. I started it up and looked and listened. Everything looked normal.
The noise was of course gone because i had already started it about 3 hours ago to make a video. So weird that it will only do it on a cold start. Maybe im not getting a good flow of transmission fluid at cold start?

Did you fill the converter before you put it all back together? Maybe you mentioned it, but are your fluids full?

When I swapped the motor i didn't mess with the torque converter. When i changed the transmission fluid and filter i again left the torque converter as is.

Transmission fluid was a little low. It was below the bottom level indicator. It pays to add a pint from that level so i did. we will see what that does on the next cold start.

it could be the starter gear hanging up on the flex plate.

I have another starter that im going to swap in there and see what happens. I`ll see what the pint of trans fluid did for it tomorrow as well.

I'll bet it was the low fluid. When I swapped in my used trans and was filling it for the first time while running it was making a ginding noise until I brought it up to level. Freaked me out at first, lol...

Google starter shimming and see if any of the noises/descriptions fit.

I`m leaning away from the starter idea. It doesn't have quite the same sound. I put of quart of transmission fluid in it yesterday. Now its reading at the lower level hole in the dipstick. So im guessing it was about 2 quarts low on transmission fluid. I haven't had a chance to fill it up completely yet. I think im already noticing the noise to be less and shorter lasting than before. Before i put that quart in to get me at the lower indicator the grinding would last for about 1 minute thirty seconds. the grinding lasted about only 30 seconds after i added a quart. Hopefully when it gets to the full mark there will be no noise at all.

You posted before checking the level? Then put in only enough to get to the add level? Please.. top it off and check all your other fluids while you are under the hood.

the transmission fluid is topped off along with the blinker fluid. I changed the starter out to another one I had laying around. I still am getting some grinding on a cold start.
the transmission shifts fine and performs as it should elsewise.is it possible for the transmission filter to fall off? wrong fluid maybe?

do you have a open cone filter you just put on by chance? these cars sound like crap on a cold start via the intake. sounds like gravel tossing inside the engine.

A trans filter can't fall totally out. It can be loose and allow air past. Which would typically cause a whine from the pump, not a grind.

Did the flex teeth look good? I guess if you pulled the pan and found any debris that would explain a grind, but only at startup right... man that's odd.

I did put a KN drop in filter that was already in the donor car. I switched it back to paper filter and it took car of that grindng noise i thought was coming from the transmission. It sounded way louder when i removed the intake tube off the air box. Makes me wonder whats wrong with the motor/supercharger.

nothings wrong, thats the sound the intake makes when its cold due to the iat sensor iirc.

every one of us with a open cone filter hear it when the engine is ice cold start up. that k n filter may let more sound out of the air box and you could hear it.
