Thread: 99 Intrigue trans into a 99 Regal LS

Over the weekend I swapped my sons 99 Regal LS trans and put in a 99 Intrigue (l36) and everything went fine.



Now I'm getting incorrect gear ratio.

I've copied entire trans tables over in the bin file and still the same thing after about 10-15 minutes of driving. Everything is fine to begin with but then starts banging gears.

The axles fit fine, TC that came with the trans bolted up fine. Nothing else out of the ordinary.

What am I missing? Is it an issue with the gear ratio in the tune or something hardware I can look for?

try 3.05 gear ratio

Tried that.. I believe the 99 LS trans that was in the car had 3.29's.

that's was i would think but I'd try a 2.86 too just in case. Hell try 2.93 too.

actually the stock LS trans has 3.05's. Tried that too.

not sure there then. Maybe something with the reluctor wheel or something?

Dunno. I found a 98 Intrigue bin file and copied the entire trans table on and it still didn't matter. Doubt there would be a difference between the 98 and 99 trans.

I did notice the stamp on the top part next to the trans connector. The original trans has 911 on it and the replacement has 914 on it. Not sure what that means though.

What tuner are you using to change the info with? HPT is a bit of a pain and you have to do a little math.

Or ... pop off the diff cover, swap over the diff and sun gear, and put your stock trans file back in.

Yeah I read that I could swap the diff.. just reallllllyyyyy don't want to. I'm sore as it is from this weekend and really don't want to turn wrenches for a few weeks at least .

i know there's the three things in the PT to change under gear ratio..

I just figured with the 98 Intrigue file I'd be able to copy junk over and it would work. Unless i'm missing something?

I have taken the entire transmission section and copied it over before, which you mentioned you did. So it's odd that didn't work. Maybe it didn't take, give it another try.

Yeah i tried it close to 5-6 times.

Even did a full write instead of a partial last night.

Other than changing the diff, what else would cause a 730 code? Anything hardware inside the trans? I've checked the electrical connections. Just the round plug on the side cover and the one on the tail end. Along with the connections on the gear elector. That's it right?

730 is from the pcm watching the input (input shaft speed) and output (vehicle speed sensor), while having an expected reluctor tooth count and doing math to come up with gear ratio.

GM expected that you'd have 4000 pulses (vss) per mile. Some Olds (I recently found out) shipped with smaller tires. Maybe it's the reluctor count and tire size difference that is giving you a hard time.

To me the easy fix is swap diff, or copy it over and then change tire size to match your tires.

I'm going to try and swap the sensor on the end of the tail/diff area (the VSS I believe) from the old one and double check the wiring.

If that doesn't work I'll swap the diff over. (ugh)

I almost wonder if it's wiring or the VSS sensor because there are times were it would bang gears right away after flashing it and others it would take up to a good 15 minutes. Pretty random.

The trans DID sit for at least 2-3 years with almost no fluid in it.

I hate to speak from experience in suggesting you swap the diff, I am though. The pcm would throw a different code if the vss was bad, basically it wouldn't be able to calc the bad ratio. When you do the diff, count the teeth on the reluctor that sits on the outside of the diff. I bet it's a different number or the tire size is off.

I tried using HPT to program for the incorrect number on a reluctor and couldn't do it. Ended up pulling, changing reluctor and bam.. all set.

Think he'll be ok driving it here and there the rest of the week? I prolly won't be able to swap the diff until Saturday. I know it it'll bang gears but he needs it to run back and forth to work (down the street).

Not to thread jack, but if you would have let me know that GTP you were selling a while back had a low mileage bottom end I may have bought it.........

Honestly Joe the car had other issues you probably didn't want it.

that and I normally when you tell someone that it has a different bottom end in it they freak out. I didn't know you were on the forums at the time.

Along with I'm not sure if it had low miles on it. I think Nate said it had maybe 80k on it? Then on top of it he had a 600 hp turbo set up on it too.
