I snapped the input shaft in my trans the last time I went racing. So, to keep from having to push the car around, I pulled the trans out, installed a new input shaft, new drive chains, hardened 4th clutch hub, and a new differential. The drive chains were stretched pretty far, the 4th clutch hub had worn splines, and the diff broke the roll pin. So, after replacing all that and putting it back together, I got the car running last night. The transmission makes kind of a knocking noise, which sounds like it's coming from the differential area. It does it not matter if it's in park, neutral, or drive. However, when it's in drive or reverse, the noise is louder.

I took a video....not sure if that helps.

Anyone have an idea what it could be?

Just listened to the video.....Did you replace the caged bearing that is inside of the stator support? Durning an input shaft failure that can be easily damaged and you're not gonna know it until you put it all back together.

    Replace torque converter?
    Flywheel?

No, I didn't replace it. The input shaft broke off clean in the tc groove....think it could have damaged the bearing?

Reused the torque convertor and flywheel.

It really does sound like it's coming from the diff side though.

First thing to do is isolate the noise between the engine and transmission, disconnect the converter from the flexplate and then re-start the engine and listen for the noise, if the noise is still there then it is in the engine, if it goes away than it is in the transmission.
Also make sure the flexplate is not damaged and that the harmonic balancer is not broken.

    that shouldn't move like that.

looks like the flex plate to crank bolts are loose broken, what ever, same for the tc bolts. if they are in still.

I pulled the TC bolts out...that's when I noticed the flex plate was loose on the crank. Looks like the bolts were backing out.

This would have been a little easier if I would have seen it when the motor was still out of the car. Should have looked at it closer.

****ty. Are they still the stock bolts or are they arps? I've read the arps have a tendency to do that.

lets hope the bolts come out all nice like. and none are snapped off. that really does suck.

on the bright side, at least its not the tranny

They are stock bolts. I've never had them out.

Yes! At least it should be an easy fix. I don't mind pulling the motor by itself from these cars...I hate the tranny though.

if your lucky you can just lift it up and over a bit and work on it still in the engine bay. saves all that time unhooking everything.

Idk, if I would reuse the stock bolts, they are torque to yield bolts. I tried reusing mine and one broke before I even torqued it down.

i dont think he could reuse them if he wanted to. once they back out and clang like that the threads are smashed on the bolts.

I wouldn't even think about reusing the bolts.
