Hey guys. So, after my thread on possibly my TCS going (http://www.grandprixforums.net/showt...29#post1158329), my car started slipping from 1-2. Its a very lazy shift and then a clunk. I'll get a video of it if need be. Other gears are fine and drives great otherwise.

Car has 140k miles on it now and i'm trying to decide what to do. A family friend is telling me trans probably needs rebuilt and wants me to take it to a trans shop. However, from what I've researched, a lot of times this may be due to simple maintenance (drop and fill). I've had the car for 60-70k miles and I haven't flushed the trans. There's the saying that goes around that if you haven't done it after 100k miles, don't do it, but I'm tempted to drop the pan, change the filter and put new fluid in to see if it helps or resolves the issue.

If it does need rebuilt, do I drop the $1500 to get it rebuilt (I don't have the means to do it), or try and ditch the car (I still owe on it) and get something else?

If I drop the pan, do I get it flushed, or just let it drain and fill back up?

    Help

Don't flush the trans and buy a shift kit on ebay. I got a new remaned trans from TEP and it works great.

Never flush if you don't know the history of the trans, I say drop the pan and filter, change fluid and add some Lucas trans fluid. Then see how it performs then go from there. Always start cheap first lol

if its slipping its got one foot in the grave already. shift kit wont help slipping, the clutches are shot already.

but the lucas may help it last longer, if you keep your foot out of the gas.

Well if everything else is fine why would you ditch it just because the trans needs a rebuild specially of you still owe on it. Hell 140k you should be happy a lot of guys that don't make it that far. IMO pay the $1500 for the rebuild you'll have some type of warranty and keep on driving it. Don't let a trans issue scare you away from the car.

mine blew up too. put a used tranny in there on the cheap. works just fine still.

bad tranny is no reason to get rid of a car, you'll loose money on it selling it off broken.

I'm not necessarily looking to get rid of it - just wasn't sure of putting the money into it.

    So... a rebuild it is....

It's the weakness of our cars.. You take care of the trans then everything else should be easy peazy if it goes out. How much do you still ore if you don't mind me asking? Also a pan drop and shift kits is not a bad idea it may allow you some more time to get the necessary funds if the problems persists after that.

    6800! It hurts.

I drive a lot for my job, so I've put 70k on in 2 years.

I can do a pan drop and shift kit... I just didn't want to do it if it's going to speed up the death. It's my daily driver with no backup, so I have to be careful when i get risky

Thanks! I've got a buddy up here who quoted me 1400 out the door for the whole thing (w/ warranty), so I'm going to take it up to his shop next week some time and see what the deal is. If it doesn't work, out, I might give you a buzz!

140K isn't a lot but yes the trannys are the weak link...are the 97-03 and 04+ 4t65e trannys the same? because $300 will get you a craigslist tranny from a 6th gen
