My first post and first Grand Prix. I bought it knowing the tranny was not right. The car has no tranny codes I scanned it. It will not move in any gear or even try to. The lady I got it from said she just paid to have a shift cable put in it and the following day it would not move. Any thoughts or ideas. Please help me get going in the right direction here.

    Thanks

well id check that the cable is hooked up, on the tranny driver side, follow the cable. the end part likes to break off.

I checked it and it is actually moving the gear selection arm.

High miles, the fluid looks and smells fine. It does not look or smell burnt.

will it move at all in 1 st gear? or rev? does it whine when you give it gas when in gear?

Depending on the year there are 3-4 possibilities. Could be the input sun gear is stripped out, pressure control solenoid or valves sticking in the valve body, or a torque converter failure (usually only a gxp thing). It's unlikely to be a clutch problem because you have no engagement in both forward and reverse

With the car running, does the fluid appear overfilled? Coming out the vent near the shifter cable bracket?

If you are getting no movement forward or in reverse it's most likely a fluid issue. Meaning it's not flowing. Our transmissions are essentially a few hydrauilc systems built upon each other. Without fluid flow.. you get nothing.

Lol. It is not most likely a fluid issue. Knowing the year would be helpful. They have to be pretty much empty to not get any movement and over full will not result in no movement

If he checks and it's overfull, that typically means the pump isn't pumping. Assuming someone didn't dump an extra X quarts into the trans w/o checking fluid level. When the pump doens't pump.. the level is higher than when it's pumping, hence why it appears overfull. If the pump isn't pumping.. there's no fluid moving. My meaning here for a guy that doesn't know what the trans does and how it works is generic. Most of my posts are usually easy tests etc that a guy w/o any real equipment can check quickly.

The fluid out the breather is commonly to a channel plate gasket. This will usually mean pressure is bleeding off.

Also, I'm aiming at what most guys typically see failures from and what I've encountered and read up on. It's not perfect and from the sounds of it you have a ton of experience with transmissions.

I worked for a Pontiac dealer for 13 years and have since moved to a Chevy. I dont have much input on aftermarket performance questions but can help with most stock vehicle diagnosis. Your check with it being over full due to the pump not pumping is spot on though but I have not seen that near as often as the things I mentioned. The best bet would be to pull the pan and check for metal debris. If it has steel debris it is most likely the input sun gear.

Sounds like the pump shaft is broke.
    Or stripped.

I have checked and it appears the pump is operating. The fluid level was high on the dipstick before I started the car and lower once the car was started. I am guessing I will have to replace the tranny

Go ahead and remove the pan and see what kind of debris is in it. If you find some take a picture and post it.
