So I've got a 1999 GTP, fluid looks ok. Level is fine but its acting up.

If in drive or 3 it does nothing. Reverse works fine. But if I shift to 2 or 1 it will drive but shudders if give too much throttle. After getting going and it goes through the first 2 gears you can move the shifter to 3rd, shifts to 3rd fine. Drive a little more, put it in overdrive, overdrive works fines and it flys. No shuddering at all in 3rd or 4th.

Tranny shot? I have heard of PCS issues but didn't think the symptoms matched what I had going on.

Why would it shift when manually changing the gears though but not when putting it in top gear?

from what i understand, there is another band for 1 and 2, if it dont move in D or 3 rd off the line the forward band is broken.

if you were to drop your trans pan the end of the band that breaks falls into the pan most of the time.

ok. Was hoping it might be something simple/stupid. Looks like the car will end up getting stripped...

Damn man, the band is only like $15, and it doesn't take a genius to remove the trans, tear it down and replaced it.
There are to many trans rebuild threads out there to scrap it over a $15 part!

Thought about trying to do the transmission myself, am very mechanically inclined but never messed with a trans, aside from just swapping out.

But, other issues have compiled with the car as well. Struts are shot, rockers are gone, engine light is on because previous owner had "cat replaced," and 240k miles. Plus I can then use the motor for something else. Hate to do it, but financially makes more sense to get rid of it.

Makes me wonder though, how bad it would be to actually revamp the trans. But the way I do things, I would end up replacing EVERYTHING so I don't have an issue down the road and it would prolly cost twice as much as TEP trans. haha

So for a rebuild, for this forward band that would be a rather minor problem? And with 240k, unknown if trans has ever been worked on. Would it be worth keeping the trans for a rebuild experiment?

    Definately keep for a rebuild.
I just rebuilt mine with all of the major upgrades for less than $600.

Its not hard to do, just Pay attention when taking it apart.

Here's another question. I have an '01 Bonneville trans 4T65E laying around. Fluid didn't look horrible but it had no forward gears no matter what you select. Would any/all of these parts be compatible with the 4T65E-HD out of the GTP?

It's basically the same trans. There were valve body/channel plate upgrades/changes over the years. But 99 GP to 01 Bonnie. Yeah Almost every part is interchangeable. You'll have an internal selector switch (Bonnie) vs an external, but if you follow my how to add an external pnp to a trans, it's one nut and two bolts plus lining the part up. Poof you have external.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
