Ive been reading reading alot of threads about the hard shift fix and adding universal tranny coolers to help with the hard shift and heat issues with the 4T65e/HD. I was on ZZPs website and noticed their heat exchanger that would be used for Intercooled appications. Im wondering why cant that be used as a trans cooler. I understand it would be Extreme Overkill but it would be a simple install and would be more than enough to keep the trans cool. Need opinions please

I also understand it would take alot of fluid to fill it.

I bet it would work, but the smaller coolers can do just as good of job.

Its just up to you on what money you want to spend and so on.

Also, adding a shift kit from trangso will help alot too.

Triple Edge Performance came out with a rather beefy kit and quite a bit less oil drum fill factor...

Granted he's making it for LS4 cars, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Heater cores are pretty cheap compared to the zzp intercooler heat exchanger.

Just food for thought a cooler that size would have a lot of pressure drop due to so much space inside the cooler.

I didn't think about the pressure drop it would cause

No it wouldn't. It would hold a lot of fluid but would not restrict the flow. A small cooler with small ports would restrict the flow.

If it is filled with fluid all the way with no leaks. Fluid doesnt compress. Air does. It will not change the pressure in the tranny.

i googled the **** out of this idea cause it seemed very plausible, however alot of guys are saying since most cooling systems are under 15PSI that transmission line pressures could cause issues overtime, however i dont think transmission line pressures are that high. honestly amazon has most transmission coolers on the cheap might as well stick to tried and true IMO

I think that the large flow path diameters would give you some strange flow profiles for trans fluid (dead spots, eddies, etc.) The geometries of inter coolers are designed for the fluid dynamic properties of air, not liquid. Would it work as a heat exchanger? Probably, but it's definitely not optimized for heat transfer of a viscous liquid.

    now thats 100% not right.....

so your cars radiator is ineffective too eh? how do you think a IC for a supercharger works? liquid to air.

the bigger the rad or cooler any fluid travels through should be cooled faster or better. more fluid, even more better.

oh, and the fluid flows through little tiny tubes with fins around it to dispurse the heat as air flows through it, theres no dead spots, or eddies, this aint a river.

I think you misunderstood my point, as I was a bit vague. When I say not optimized, I don't mean it wouldn't work as well or better, I'm saying it would be overkill for the application. And yes, obviously your radiator is exchanging to air on the outside, as is your supercharger inter-cooler, oil cooler, and transmission cooler all are. What I am referring to is what is being cooled inside the exchanger. You wouldn't normally use the same exchanger for both applications, because the "fluids" flow/transfer heat differently.

of course not, thats why they sell liquid to air coolers, and air to air for say turbo applications.

And I thought I overkilled the crap out of it with dual 16,000GVW coolers...

What happens when you actually wanna add an intercooler though?

That's the single most inefficient way mount a trans cooler especially two tube fin ones. You could've saved time and space by using a bar plate design mounted horizontally.

Holy negative NANCY!!! They get more than enough airflow, what are you talking about inefficient? (If you're referring to how the hot and cold side are next to each other I can somewhat agree, but on the other hand it's 32,000GVW!!!!! and was the best way to safely route the lines) And how does mounting a bar and plate take that much less time? Also why do I care about saving space somewhere nothing else will ever be placed?

the way your drawing shows the lines going to the duel coolers should be changed. I would have the fluid go in on the far right and leave at the far left. if you have the in and out right next to each other the heat transfer from the new hot fluid will heat the fluid about to come out.
