I recently realized my transmission on my '97 GTP was basically done after 204,000 miles. I was going to repair it but found another 4t65e-HD with 78,000 miles and bought it. The problem is that it is from an '08 Chevy Impala SS. On my car the starter is mounted to the block and on the new transmission the housing doesn't have the bulge to fit the starter like the old one. Instead it has a place to mount the starter on the housing just on the upper side of the block. I'm wondering if anyone has ran into this and knows if a starter can fit between the block and headers. Also, I am concerned about problems from heat.

It wont work without lots of modifications. You need a trans from a 97-02 and a 98-02 trans you will need to change the cooler line fittings 97s had screw in 98-02 had quick release.

The LS4 transmission is different from your 97 trans. The case, the TCM controls and the PCM.

It will not work at all.

You must find a 97-02 HD trans for a 99% direct drop in transmission.

The only thing that changes in 99 or 00 was the cooler line fittings.

It was 98 when they switched the cooler lines cam. From what I remember 97 was the only year with screw in lines.

That's unfortunate. Would I just be able to switch everything out of the new one and rebuild the old then?

    Nope.

Way way too much is different between the years to work.

Alright. It was a risk worth the price I paid. Off to figure out something else.

You could use everything up to the valve body and channel plate. Those pieces must be from 97-02 to work in your case with the rest of the parts. Some V8 parts are beefier
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
