Ok, so i bought a new truck and have been driving that for the past 6 months but now that it is summer i decided to get my 2000 gtp going. The battery was bad when i parked it and just grabbed a new one and put it in. When I started it up and tried putting it in gear i could hear that click under the dash when you pull the lever on the shifter but shifter won't move. It also feels like the shift lever doesnt go in as far as it used to? help would be appreciated on where to start on this one.

Check the shifter linkage to the transmission.

You can also try to push in the shift lock release.

ok i will take a look. It looked fine from the top of the tranny where it connects but i will need to get a jack tomorrow to look at the rest. Shift lock didn't work when I tried either. I was kind of hoping that it would be a common problem :/

my regal had a similar problem. turned out the shiftier rod was rusted up or corroded inside the shaft, spray lubed it up. all better.

the release button moves a shaft inside the shaft of the shiftier on my regal. thats what needed to be lubed up. being your car has been sitting, this may be the same case for you.

ignore the part about the jack from my last post. does not go under the car goes in through the firewall! mast have got a line mixed up when i looked the first time. Scottydoggs, that was done by pulling the trim or panels apart around the shifter?

i took the console out. that way you can see how the whole thing works clearly.
