Can you guys tell me what tranny's will fit my 2000 GP GT?

I can buy wrecked GP's off a salvage auction through a friend of mine, but to get one with low mileage they are usually newer cars - 03,04 and up.

What I need to know is will the newer series III trannys fit in my 2000 model? And what other trouble am I going to get myself into that I don't know about.

    Computer's, ect.

    Thanks

An 00-02 trans will work ok in your car. 03+ trans will require a 03 pcm and possibly a little wiring work.

    TrannyMan,

My car had been doing the surging rpm thing for a little while now - it still does it once in a while. When 4th gear left, it sounded like I hit something in the middle of the road.

    My question's are these:

With 4th out - how much debris is in the system now? With money the way it is I may elect to try and run it in 3rd this winter. Can I get away with changing the filter and making sure the selector is is the 3 position?

I can guess your reply: "Yes, - all the way to the scene of the tranny failure."

Round and round she goes, where she'll stop nobody knows..... My guess is that you will get by for a while, but the next stop will likely be a roadside failure somewhere. Based on my past experience, you will be away from home and it will be raining when it fails.

As long as you leave the shifter in "3" position it should last you a while. When the 4th clutch hub splines strip out it doesnt generate a whole lot of metal all at once as the splines pretty much wear down to nothing over time so it is a very gradual occuring problem. There are a lot of people that I have built or repaired transmissions for that have driven a very long time without 4th, some up to a year or so. But then there are some that had the trans go out, so yes it is a difficult answer to give you as they all act different. Again I would suggest leaving the shifter in 3 and not D as D range is going to allow the pcm to command 4th clutch to apply and this means the 4th clutch shaft is held in place while the stripped end sits still inside of a spinning gear and can generate more metal to get chewed away.

What was the noise I heard? Something gave up real hard. Like I said, it sounded and felt like I had roached something on the road.

    Trannyman,

Is the trans in the GTP different? I saw a wrecked 2002 GTP coming up on an auction that supposedly only had 72k on it. Would that trans work good in the 2000 GT?

    thanks

Biggest issues is going to be the gearing, the GPGT has a 3.29:1 overall and the GTP has a 2.93:1 overall. You can reprogram the computer to compensate for that, and you will also need a passenger-side axle, they're different to compensate for the larger differential.
