I recently bought a 1999 GTP with a rebuilt transmission and i'm thinking it's just about shot again so whoever rebuilt it did a sucky job. Driving down the highway it'll ride around 1,000 rpm and I have to give it gas to get it up to about 3,500 rpm to really get it to accelerate where it jolts into what i'm assuming is 3rd. and the shifts from park into drive and from 1-2 are very slow and if I don't give it a second going from P-D it'll jolt real hard going into gear. I've also noticed it bangs a little getting into reverse too. Maybe i'm just being stupid and these things aren't a big deal but i'm new to this stuff. We've all gotta start somewhere hah. So my question is what should I do? Have the transmission rebuilt again, buy a rebuilt transmission and have it installed, or buy a new transmission and have it installed?

I was told it was rebuilt 20,000 miles ago. The guy I bought it from owns a shop and said he'd warrant the transmission but I can't get a hold of him and he seems to be avoiding me so i'm thinking I got screwed there.

Yeah my parents bought the car for my 18th birthday and didn't get anything on paper with his signature so i'm sure he's gonna screw me there. I kind of expected it honestly. You can't trust anyones word anymore unfortunately.

if its not on paper for get it. its rebuild time from another shop, or junk yard tranny. or Craigslist part out shopping time.

not sure if your close to morads being in OH. but hes always got trannys for sale.

then theres greg badass, he maybe able to work out some kind of deal with you if you guys are close enough. hes in OH and has rebuilt a few trannys.

or TEP, iirc they are in your neck of the woods.

tep is a sponsor here you see their banner ad at the top of the home page.

gregs just a member who lives in OH that can re build a tranny.

as far as rebuilding one, im scared to death of the inside of a tranny lol i have no clue how to do it, or what to buy.

i do know that if you can swap the tranny your self, you will save a good chunk of cash. no real special tools needed.

Alright haha. I've looked into swapping one myself and I might try that. I guess i'll look into finding a rebuilt trans with a warranty and actually get some documentation on that warranty this time lol.

Unless you are going to pull a tranny from junker, or get one that's a clunker, either way you have no idea how they were rode or cared for no matter what. Sure you save some $, but could wind up redoing the work shortly thereafter.

But let's start from the beginning... How many miles on car? What shape was it when you got it? Seem abused? Have you checked the fluid? Burnt or brown? Any codes?

I would invest in a tranny pan drop, replace fluid and filter if fluid looks or smells bad and go from there. When dropping pan, you'll see if it's been abused (lots of metal in the pan on the magnet). Do NOT under any circumstances do a flush!

Sometimes, a simple fluid change will work wonders, but is not a cure all.

Lastly, depending on your plans for the car, if I were going to spend any money at all, I'd just go all the way and have a TEP shipped out to me : ). They have various levels of builds and recently reintroduced doing even just a normal DD build (basix). Worth it IMO! If I'm going to pay 1,200-1,500 for a pedestrian rebuild, I'll spend a little more and get a rock solid one from TEP.
Overkill BBC Cam, YT 1.8 RR's, Rhodes Lifters, STGII Heads, GenV, Pacesetters, 3" Exh to Tips, TEP Trans. N*, ID 75# injectors/E85 coming soon

Well there are 119,000 miles on the car. It doesn't seem like its been too abused but the work done by the guy I bought it from seems cheap and poorly done.. He did an awful job at putting the interior pieces back together and it was dirty. I checked the fliud and it doesn't smell burnt but does look brown. I have one code but its not transmission related. Its P0440 I believe. So i'll look into a pan drop and fluid/filter change. I hear you should do that every 20,000 miles or so and thats about how long its been since the rebuild.
