I asked a similar question to this for engines earlier this week. http://www.grandprixforums.net/what-...1-a-75217.html
Same car, gonna look for newer 3800 at a pick-a-part and figured while I'm at it might try and get the combo. His car has around 220K on the clock and I'm worried if we get this new motor in the tranny wont be far behind. So, will a newer tranny fit or are the controls and stuff completely different?

'97 GT/SE Transmissions are year specific.

'97-'02 GTP's all have the same transmission.

'98-'02 GT's have the same transmission...

    '03 are year specific.

    '04+ belong on '04+ cars.

They aren't compatible as far as I know...

To add to what blue has
97 GTPs have different fittings on the cooler lines.
And there is a thread of someone who was working on getting one to work in his car, idk how far he got but its a lot of work.
