A damaged thrust washer behind the sun gear in the differential will cause a noise when de-accelerating. When this washer/bearing "goes-out" it sends metal into the planet/ring/sungear chipping the teath, and the sun gear grinds into the diff.carrier, (audible noise). Metal will be found in the trans. oil pan.
"easy" is subject to opinion and experience, more of a PIA for me.
I had to replace the differential housing because the sun gear scored the surface the thrust washer sits on, and the teath on the sun/planet/ring gear were chipped, so I replaced the diff. with a good used one accuired from a local tranny shop, it was $200 with next day shipping to thier shop, I installed it myself.
Depending on wear/damage, gear teath, at the very least a new thrust washer has to be installed, and all the metal cleaned out of the pan. Fortunate for me, the magnet in the pan was directly under the fluid return hole from the diff. and captured most of the metal fragments. I changed the trans. filter and refilled with fluid, all has been fine since then.
Ok thanks, in front of the diff. There should be two washers correct?
