This is gonna make me look really stupid, but i have never changed the transmission fluid on my car before, and I know where the drain plug is but I still am puzzled about where and how to put in the new fluid. Once again I feel stupid posting this but if someone could help me out it would be nice!

These transmissions do not have a drain plug, you have to unbolt the lower pan and leave a few bolts in and let it drain and then remove it. You will then have access to replace the filter. To fill the trans there is a dipstick that is towards the rear of the engine compartment with a red handle and once you pull out the stick you will need a skinny funnel to add fluid in the tube.

Anything Dexron VI rated is going to be a decent fluid. For me, I picked up some Valvoline Dexron VI fluid because it is a full synthetic.Originally Posted by 2000GTP

Yep Dex VI is a drop in replacement and a synthetic fluid and is a better fluid than the original. The fluid that came in the car from the factory was Dexron 3 which is fine to use also and is cheaper.

is the dexron VI ok to mix with the dexron III in the tranny because i read something that said you cant drain all of the fluid, because some is in the torque converter. How would you go about getting this fluid out of there? or should I just get the most of the fluid out, and leave the leftover dexron III in the converter and mix them?

Dex VI and Dex III can mix. It's fine.
Lol, I'm curious. You said you knew where the drain plug was. What plug were you talking about.

There's 20 bolts on the trans pan. To avoid a mess take one corner of the bolts loose to the point were there is like 1-2 maybe 3 threads holding them in the trans pan. Then take a flat head screw driver and GENTLEY!!!!!!!! pry that side of the pan down. It might stick to the gasket. If you do this you'll avoid dropping the pan or making a MASSIVE mess of trans fluid in the drive way. Oh I forgot the pan bolts are a 10mm head My fault

ok, is there a specific torque rating i should put the bolts down to?

10 ft/lb. Much more, and the bolts will break. I've even broken one at that rating.

Because that's not the factory spec. Factory spec is about 90 in-lbs. 10 ft-lbs is 120 in-lbs. You went 33% over what their spec is.

25. Install the bottom pan onto the transaxle case, as shown in Figure 206.
26. Install the 20 bottom pan bolts and torque the bolts to 14 N.m (10 lb.ft.).

For whatever reason, the GM SI manual says 90lb-in for 2003 and on, and that's what I was going by. I guess GM eventually realized the bolts were breaking.

nope... just bought my torque wrench too. i wanted to get that 1 because i was gonna b doing my tires n stuff and i knew the lug torque was 100 ft-lbs

Thats the oil pan to case torque spec it says
