Thread: Torque converter, is my one-way stator clutch gone?

FLHB torque converter from my 4T65E

From what I understand of how a torque converter works, the one-way clutch in the stator should allow it to rotate freely in one direction (clockwise), but not rotate in the other (counterclockwise). Right?

I can rotate the stator freely in either direction. So is the one-way clutch gone?

I have my TC dropped and in my garage, I will check and confirm.

I'm pretty sure you're not correct.

The TC is nothing more than a fluid coupling where the stator fins INDUCE rotation in the rotor fins. This induction is done via the ATF and the bernoulli effect.

Take two regular household fans. Aim them toward one another and place them about 2" apart. Turn one on, it will cause the oher one to rotate as the air induces rotation. This is all a TC is, except it's submerged in ATF.

The splines you are turning are the stator splines that engage the stator support on the front of the transmission, the stator support "holds" the stator so the sprag can function. With the converter out of the transmission, it (stator) is just sitting in the converter, and yes you will be able to turn it both ways, nothing to worry about.
