heres my dilemna. i purchased my 2001 grand prix gt four months ago for $2500. it has 190k miles right now. the car runs and is in good condition besides the tranny. overdrive is not workinv and 2nd gear is rough. i was aware about the OD issue when i purchased it and planned to deal with it later. i do 80% highway driving and only getting 18 mpg due to no OD. i have been quoted $2321 for a rebuilt swap with 3 yr warranty or 100k miles or $1608 for a used tranny with 1 yr warranty. i would like you guys opinion if the rebuild is worth it or go used or do nothing. i plan to keep the car for awhile and i do oil changes regularly.

My thoughts are how long do you plan on keeping the car? If you plan on having it for awhile call a major trans company like TEP and get their trans. If you plan on ditching it in a year or so, go used.

    That rebuild price seems high.

You can get a performance built trans from triple edge performance installed for less than that IIRC.

As for the build or not, see hitman's post.

tep wants $1549 for a rebuilt. i assume thats the tranny only. so would have to pay for shipping and labor for swap. $2321 was for pulling out old, install rebuilt, and 3yr warranty(or 100k miles) does tep 4t65e tranny has much better upgraded parts? i have talked to many "cars guys" and they said that price sound good for parts, labor, and warranty. i do plan on keeping it for at least 3-5 years.

    This one.

Read the list of things in each build.

The street/strip trans is the minimum level i'd suggest. It'd be setup to operate at a much higher level than a stocker.

However if you're easy on the car, a local repair might be easier.

I should mention the 3 year includes parts and labor. I'll ask about getting a tranny from TEP.
