does the 4t65e hd really take 7.4 quarts when just draining the pan and changing filter?

its what AllDATA shows, but that seems excessive to me.

Yup, its roughly around that. I usually put in 6 quarts check it. Then add keep adding and checking until the level is right.

    dexron 3 is cheap anyway.

Dont buy dexron 6 if you are 04 and older.

Most of the specs say it takes 6 quarts. I tell people to buy two of the gallon jugs. It'll take 7-7.5 quarts.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

dexron 6 is compatible with dexron 3.
I use it in both my cars and by the walmart supertech brand. Its cheap and is the same stuff GM sales

    right its "compatible"

But I just prefer to use what came in the trans from the factory, instead of upgrading to the more synthetic blend that dexron 6 is.

I just hit up napa and dexron 3 is always around 2 bucks cheapers per quart, so thats why I run it.
