so the past day or two i have been talking to different transmission shops around my city. i found one that gave be a good price of 1500$ to take the trans out them self, put a shift kit in it, reprogram it and put high performance internals in it. then put it back in. all under warranty. i know alot of people say go for a TEP trans but for the price and the reviews of this company im thinking about going for it. i was wondering if this is a good idea? he had said he did 8-10 of the ls4 trans in the past and have not had any complaints.

It does BUT sometimes you find good deals. Mines is being rebuilt now for 1200. I'm still shocked at the price.

why not buy the parts for 850 from tep and then have a local shop do the work. then you know what parts you have.

Part of the reason some places will do it cheap are they want the business. Because even if you aren't charging top dollar...staying busy pays the bills. Other times it's because they check the valve body to be good where TEP automatically puts in all the VB upgrades. They listen to things like the stator bearing to see if it's bad, TEP automatically changes the stator bearing because it's known to cause whining. Many places put in the called for number of clutches which can leave a lot of space in the packs, TEP modifies the clutch packs to ensure they are clearanced for the application and best engagement. TEP modifies spacer places based on the application.

Let's talk about high performance parts in our transmissions. There are a couple of clutch packs like a Zpak etc floating around, but most have been used up and aren't being produced anymore as our platform has aged. Being a GXP you'd already have a hardened 4th hub, you'd already have the beefier parts in the trans like the pinion gear. There isn't much that a standard trans shop has available to call a performance part to add to a GXP 4T65E trans.

Likely what they are doing is pulling it out, checking things over, fixing the VB if it's an issue, relining the clutches and tossing it back in. I hope they are also doing the seals, but that is a large amount of time and effort that would usually drive the price up.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

ask him for the stage 1 kit. here is the email he sent.

    "Hello,

Thanks for your parts inquiry. For a full rebuild for your application I would suggest our Stage1 High Performance Complete Kit which is $824.95. Complete Kit details are on our website and the performance kit adds a few more items including a performance ratio boost valve and sleeve kit. We sell used sprocket sets for $49.95 and you would need the 35/35 set to achieve a 3.29 ratio. The TCM must be reprogrammed to work with a ratio other than stock.

For shipping we would need a full address to get an exact shipping rate. These kits normaly cost about $20-$25 to ship FedEx Ground.

Thanks again for your interest, if you have any other questions let us know
