I just picked up a 04 gtp and it has a growling noise while under power. Under development or in neutral while moving the noise disappears. It isn't that loud but I wanna just get opinions on what it is and if its going to lead to bigger problems. Its not a wheel bearing and it never really changes tone while under power.. as soon as you lift it goes away.. in all honesty it could be normal. This is the first FWD Pontiac the wife and I have ever owned.

Could be numerous things. Since you said its only under power that it makes noise I'd start with axles and mounts

I'm confused as to how you know it's not a wheel bearing. The symptoms point directly at a wheel bearing.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Doesn't change tone at all when turning either direction, and no play in wheel bearings.

Well the noise is back, finally got the car up in the air and it's coming directly from the transmission rh output shaft area. It looks like that housing just bolts on. Is there a bearing inside the housing that goes bad on these things?? There is a ton of play in the axle shaft up and down and its leaking fluid there. The noise is there under power and under decel now with it changing tone. Any help would be greatly appreciated ...

Also can I get that housing off in the car??

The diff chipped it huh? No the ring gear is the first piece put into the housing of the transmission from the driveside end of the trans casing. It only comes out after you unload it all.

Its making a pretty good bearing growl noise when its run up on the hoist.

I'm gonna pull the covet off tonight for a little inspection. I was just seeing how far I can get into the diff area of the trans with it still in the car. I didn't think you could get the ring gear out but I just figured I'd ask. I'm hoping its just the end diff bearings but honestly I've never been that lucky.

    About this bad :-)

So where is that how to remove the trans thread again?? :-)

I'm thinking this is a good time for headers, converter, and a tripleedgeperformance overhaul kit
