Thread: 02 Grand Prix Transmission Questions...

Hey all, I'm planning on doing a pan drop and filter change on my 2002 Grand Prix SE (3.1L) with 165,000 miles and had a few questions.

First, if I'm only going to do a pan drop (only replacing half the fluid) should I stick with Dex 3 or should I put Dex 6 in? I have no idea the past maintenance on the transmission so its possible it might already have 6 in it. Right now the fluid isn't really brown but its not a clean red either.

Second, I was considering getting a shift kit (possibly ZZP?) because my car seems to shift funny sometimes. Like it seems like the shift takes longer than it should and it will sometimes sound like it just dosent want to go into gear (its not like a slip-bang. It just takes a little longer than usual to shift). Would a shift kit help with this problem? Or would it at least help my transmission out a little?

What would be the advantage of switching to Dex 6?
Well I brought my car in to Valvoline to have the oil changed (I usually just do it myself but I havent been felling the best lately) and he told me the previous owner always brought this car there for oil changes and such, and told me that he had the tranny flushed about 50,000 miles ago. I dont really feel like paying the $130 to have them flush it, would it really benifit me more than just a pan drop?
