hey trannyman. i recently had a trans put in my car. i just picked it up yesterday. i have no fourth gear. the torque converter wont lock up either. i was just wondering if this is a problem i could fix. the dealer that installed my trans is not very professional. so i would like to keep it away from them. any suggestions?

I need to know more information to help out. What year/model car? Was the trans you had installed rebuilt or used and if used do you know the history? You will also need to verify if there are any history codes AND use a scan tool to watch data to verify if the pcm is commanding lockup or 4th gear. There are a lot of posibilities to your problem and without knowing the above info it will be hard to pinpoint your problem

ok. its a 2001 grand prix gtp. i believe the trans was just a junkyard trans. or a rebuilt. it doesnt feel new. but i may also have computer problems because the car has been acting strange for some time. i think that it has fourth gear at around 30 mph if im light on the throttle. but over that it stays out of fourth... its very strange. but i will scan it. if theres any codes ill post them. thank you

An 01 GTP has the 4T65E transmission so this should be moved to the 4T65E section. Since it is a 4T65E trans then no 4th gear is a common problem and is likely a stripped 4th clutch hub. This requires dropping the trans down and quite a bit of work to repair.

You have to get to the point of pulling the chain and gearset, IIRC, so that includes the valve body, pump, etc. You don't have to pull any of the clutches.
