    Hey everyone,

I recently picked up a transmission to replace my damaged one from a fellow co-worker.

the transmission is out of a 2001 monte carlo with a 3.4l, attached is a picture of the id tag and according to the id link i found searching this forum. it states that it has a 2.86 differential gear ratio, a 245mm torque converter a higher stall and it has IMS (no idea what that is)

1RDB is the code on the transmission.

now what i have is a 2002 pontiac grand prix gt. I am wondering if this is going to work for me and if not how can i make it work?

    any help is appreciated

    Mike

You need a 4t65e or a 4t65e-hd. I don't believe the motor from his 3.4 will work with your 3.8.

    Mike..

I believe IMS is Interal Mode Switch, which would be an internally located range switch to tell the pcm what gear has been selected. (I say I believe)

Does your trans have a range selector on top of it or not? This would look like a black sensor/box under the selector lever on the right of this trans

If so..you can move yours over to the new trans, swap the differential. That much should give you the same gear ratio you had before and put you back on the road. If you don't have an external switch the only concern is the gear ratio. Since all non SC'd transmissions are a 1:1 drive gear to driven gear, the gear ratio is all in the differential.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

    Billboost to the rescue again!

thanks a lot, you keep proving how informative you are everytime i ask a question

i believe the transmission in my car at the moment has the external switch, so its good to know that i can swap the switch and the differential. I hope the differential in my current trans is still good

also i was reading somewhere that i would need my pcm flashed to accept the new transmission? is this true?

    thanks again

    Mike
