I have a 98 GT with 111k miles. The outdoor temperature is about 50F. When i stop, waiting for the traffic, the coolant temp head to 200-210F, and after that, the transmission begin hard shift. Otherwise, everything is OK. Can anybody tell me why? and what to i need to do?

very good chance that pressure control solenoid needs to be replaced. or could need fluid, filter change. , go to a decent transmission shop and get it scanned...

Hey thanks that's some good info in there. I was wondering if throwing in my 180t-stat for the summer would help at all? Also thinking about putting dex 6 in because I've read it tolerates the heat better. Thoughts?

no a 180 t stat wont do anything unless u have pcm tuned for 180 t stat... dex 6 is good.. butttttt i bet u have a bad pressure control solenoid.

Dexron VI is what I run now but the fluid change alone will not solve a bad solenoid. Lowering the fluid run temperature and installing a shift kit overrides the electronic control provided by the PCS solenoid and allows the trans to operate normally as long as nothing else is wrong and saves a bundle of money needed to replace the PCS solenoid.

That is a great price! I couldn't get that done in my area for that price if my life depended on it. For $250, believe me, I would change my PCS solenoid for $250.

Below is an example of an advertsiement I just searched on google:

Tri-City Recommendation and Final Resolution: Remove transmission pan, inspect transmission filter to verify the condition of the transmission. If transmission is sound, then replace the EPC solenoid, update the valve body, replace transmission filter and service the transmission. Total cost: $850.00 .

Considering that changing the solenoid involves a fluid and filter change, dropping the transmission (I know it can be done with the tranny in the car) plus the cost of the solenoid and the shops markup on the part, most places are charging in my area $600-$700, almost all labor.

Yeah that sounds about right for price where I am as well

So will I eventually kill the tranny if I keep driving it this way? I don't have that kind of money to fix it right now, but it still gets me to work as is...

it killed mine... the pump in transmission will end up burning out. trans fail immediately thereafter. i would shop around different shops and find a better price. 800 is insane. i think the job only calls for 4 hours IIRC.

Right. Ok stupid question can a regular obd2 scanner pick this up or do I need to go to a transmission shop?

well when mine was bad... autozones scanner didnt pick it up... but others say those scanners will.... any shop that has a GOOD scanner will read trans codes... dont let them charge u to scan.. a decent shop will diagnose for free.

Yeah auto zone didn't pick up anything for tranny last week for me either. I was thinking of taking it to ammco, i think they scan for free. Not going to let them touch my transmission though
