My trans is on it's last leg, slipping, banging if I manual downshift into 2nd (I don't do this often, just did it for diagnostics), making my car slower than a base model so... I want to run 3.29s and the most cost effective way would be to get a G trans and swap it in. However, I'm having trouble figuring out if I can run a G trans without swapping in the tap shift junk or changing other componants to get it done. Has anybody done it this way or would I just be better off getting an HD trans and a gear set?

I know I will need axles since I'm updating from a GT trans, and I may get some hardened parts, and a baby stall but I will probably wait until next year for that stuff since this trans probably won't make it in until August and the season ends late October/ Early November around here.

I have a beater, so I'm not worried about finding my way to the bar.

the valve body is different in the comp g trans. you could do it though, but you might need comp g tables for the pcm

I have HPT and am prepared to change the tables for 3.29s either way I go, I just don't want to install it and find out it has to be connected to the tap shift buttons to not throw codes or to run right. That is my main concern.

like i said, the valve body is the tricky part to it and its not just adding the 3.29s to it its adjusting for the valve body. im sure you can do it but i havent looked to much into it

I would just get a non-tapshift 04+ tranny, I'd see if Tim King can do one if he's still running that special.

Thanks for the info guys. Just to make things simple, I'll probably just get an 04+ HD trans and have it rebuilt with a 3.29 gear set to finish out the year. If it breaks, it breaks and I go bigger next year.

buy a used non HD trans and swap your diff over?

    It'd probably be cheaper.

I don't have an HD trans right now... My car is an 04 GT2 so it just came with a 4T65E.
