What is the "jerk" supposed to feel like when you shift the car from park or neutral to any other gear? I'm just wondering because I've never driven another Grand Prix and have nothing to compare my shift quality to. Synthetic Dex 6 was put in the transmission about 1500 miles ago, and the shift from park to reverse has seemed to get somewhat rougher, especially when cold. I';m kind of OCD about my cars like this. If this could potentially be a problem, I'm going to swap the dex 6 out with dex 3.

How's the trans and motor mounts look? If bad could be letting the motor/trans rock a bit. My 00GT is smooth using the Dex 6. Was smooth using the Dex 3 as well. If you are getting too harsh an engagement then changing fluid will not help that.

It was smooth up until like a week ago... car only has 83k on it so I doubt it could be the motor mounts. I'll check tonight though.

My engine has been idling a little rougher because I need to change the plugs and IAC, and my AC compressor bearing is sticking. Could that explain it? Its weird how it started randomly like it did.

It's "kinda" normal in the piss poor mounting system of a W body. If you look at the rubber in the mounts on the radiator support, the factory way of putting that in is with an air gap front to back. That in itself can cause a jerk feeling.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Do you have a light on? Trans shift control solenoid will make it do this

No lights or anything. It seems to have gotten a little better over the course of the day, any reason that could happen? haha sorry for all the dumb questions, I just don't have any other car to compare mine to locally... and I love this car and want it to work well

At first start up the car is cold.. aka higher idle. The movement in the mounts can give you a good jolt. later on.. say the car is warmed up. idle is lower which gives less of a jolt.

BTW, most trans codes won't pop on a light. You'd need to scan to see if you have a code.

I've scanned it multiple times, both with the oreillys basic scanners and with a OBD2 adapter I got for my computer, nothing shows up. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my rough idle though. My AC compressor bearing is on its last leg and it squeaks and grinds whenever any moisture gets in there. I think since it's not spinning freely it's throwing off my idle a little bit, and the effect is amplified when the transmission tries to shift into gear.

Is that a decent theory? I can't think of anything else it could be beside the transmission, and that seems fine.
