I was driving on the interstate today and had to slow down for traffic. When I hit resume on the cruise control the car kind of jerked, but not really, not sure how to describe it. It hesitated and then went and the cruise worked but the check engine light went on.
I had to pass a car and thats when I noticed the transmission was shifting hard. I stopped at the next town which was a few miles away and was told at a small repair shop that I had the codes P0742A, P15554C and P1881C.
The guy cleared the codes and said to drive it around town and if the check engine light came right back on and it shifted weird I've got trans problems. If nothing happened it might just have been a weird deal with the cruise that made the car throw codes. He explained that the rough shifting and the P1881C code was just a way for the car to protect the trans when there are other problems.
I drove it around and everything seemed fine so I got back on the interstate and drove home which was 300 miles. I got curious about the codes so I jumped on here to see what I could find and wow the P0742A code isn't a good one!!!
I read some of the info on the link on trannyman95's signature but I'm hoping trannyman95 or others can tell me if this was a fluke or if I have a problem and was luck to just get home!
I've got about a 400 mile trip to take tomorrow...
The car is a 2000 GP SE with the 3.1 and has about 125k miles. The trans was rebuilt about 40k ago. I just bought the car recently as a work car to put miles on and save some gas money. I'm now wondering if maybe this is why they sold it!
After the codes were cleared the car drove great. I used the cruise and it worked fine too. I live in an area where there are hills and curves, along with road construction so the trans was shifting up and down. I didn't just get on the interstate and went one speed for the whole 300 miles after the issue. All seems fine now.
