I'm working on doing a top swap on my 97 SE(not sure but assuming it has the 4T60 tranny). I'm getting the parts from a 97 GTP. It was suggested to me to grab the tranny from the GTP so I don't blow my current one out. What would be involved in doing this swap upgrade?

Can you do a top swap on a 3100?

yes and no... you can put 3400 heads on it, but thats it.

3100 is a very different motor from the 3800.

I thought this thread was about transmission upgrade lol

i think you'd want the entire engine harness and PCM as well as the transmission.

But the PCM would have to be tuned in order for that to work unless you swapped in the engine as well.

I'd suggest you swap in the engine and tranny though.

Some more power and a better transmission.

I can get the PCM no problem. What do you mean by entire engine harness?

well are you able to compare the connectors for the tranmission between the two? (if the 4t60 even has one ?)

You will need the correct wiring for the 4t65e.

The GTP is in the junkyard. It has a 97 GT right next to it for comparison purposes.

your probably going to need a gtp harness, 4t60e is vacuum controlled not by the pcm. Your almost better off just buying a gtp.

I don't think that will be a problem. I'll have most of the engine out of the compartment anyway. How much does the tranny weigh? It's in a you pull and prey junkyard.

You will need two people unless you have long arms and can dead lift about 250-300 lbs.

transmission dry is 125-160 lbs IIRC.

engine needs two people though. Even just the block is pretty beastly.

Edit: just picked up the one in my garage.

It'd definately make life easy if you had two people but you CAN lift it... no idea how high though lol.

As long as I can get it into a wheel barrow. There are usually some people around getting stuff. I could just ask for a hand. People are pretty helpful if you ask nicely.

Well, finally got the wiring harness out. What a PIA but actually had fun. Now I just have to get the tranny out.

Snow and extreme cold has delayed tranny removal. Just ordered the ATSG manual and I'm going to attempt a rebuild before installing.
