My son's 1999 Grand Prix transmission pumped out most of the fluid through the vent (or relief valve?) today. I tracked the fluid trail back about 2 miles down the road and there was a lot in the driveway. He kept the car running after he parked to inspect for the source of the leak.
He said there wasn't a noise associated with it but there was smoke and the transmission was slipping, as expected with the fluid loss. When I got home, I started it up and fluid began pumping out the vent immediately.
Fluid barely registers on the dipstick, with the engine off.
This transmission is a Jasper reman and it was installed in May 2006.
Any thoughts as to what conditions would pump the fluild out of the vent?
    Thanks.

This used to be a very common problem on the earlier models. The channel plate gasket is blown out and when this happens - main line fluid pressure will spray straight up into the vent and leak outside the trans. This requires lowering down the transmission, removing the side cover, pump, valve body, and channel plate to replace the gaskets. These gaskets have had several revisions but by 99-00 there really wasnt a problem with this anymore. Since your transmission is already rebuilt either the bolts werent torqued properly, sealing surfaces were dirty or not flat, or some type of sealant or adhesive was used on the gasket which causes inconsistant torquing and often will blow out with age.

If it is a reman...and there is still a warranty on it...I'd suggest taking it back and having it done. But, it being done in '06, unless there is a lifetime warranty on it...I'd bet that has worn off.
