    Members,

I've been driving my GP with 148,000 miles now for several months in 3rd gear as I have no overdrive. It will run in OD but will not shift. I do not hear any whining (other than from myself) coming from the torque converter and I had the fluid flushed about a year ago to see if that would break things loose but to no avail. I've done plenty of work on rear wheel drive trannies (including full rebuilds), but have never removed a tranny from a front wheel drive vehicle. I'm assuming that the tranny needs some service, I did have the pressure control solenoid replaced just after the warranty expired (42,000 miles) and other than periodic tranny fluid changes I haven't done anything else to it. What do you all suggest??

Thank you and have a great night!

The splines on the 4th clutch hub are gone. Very common problem with the 4T65E before 2003. If you want more info, a search should turn it up.

Thank you Scimmia, I saw elsewhere on this forum that this has been discussed at length. I've rebuilt 10 automtaic transmissions but they have all been TH350/400's. I've never pulled a FWD tranny out, but it appears to be fairly involved. The car has 142,000 on it so it is probably due for a rebuild. I'll just have to see how motivated I am to get into this one...

I have to admit I prefer old school Pontiacs from the '60's.

I haven't been inside of a TH350, but I can say that the 4T65E isn't THAT much more complicated than a 4L60E. You just have to take your time, keep things organized, and be able to improvise a few tools if you don't want to spend a ton of money on the specific J-tools.

    Scimmia,

The task doesn't scare me, but from what I understand you have to remove the entire engine cradle from below to access the tranny, and this process is much easier if you have access to a lift, which I don't. I just know after refurbishing my AC system last year and what a PITA it was just to get to the orifice tube I'm not so sure I want to get that aggravated again. As I stated, I prefer to work on the old school stuff, consisting of all standard fastners, ample access, etc. I'm only 42 years old, but I grew up working on the 60's cars and that is my preference. If you've pulled this tranny, how long does it take?

I appreciate your input, thank you and have a great weekend!

I have done an R&R on the trans from the bottom, but I can't say how long it took. I was doing a number of other things at the time, including buttoning up the rebuild, so all together it took all weekend. There is quite a bit to remove, but as long as you've got air tools, a way to support the engine from above, and a bunch of extensions for the bolt that's in the wrong way, it's not horrible.

    Gafford44,

Yes, I typed out my signature after the post, I know there is a way to automatically add a signature but I wasn't interested in finding out how to do it. I have to admit that I'm rarely on this forum; as I have stated I'm just not into the late model GM stuff. We bought this car new for my wife because I've always been a Pontiac fan. Now that Pontiac is no more I don't know where I will go. I must say that I've not been impressed with GM lately, not at all. And I may upset a few people out there, but what Pontiac/GM did to the GTO was sacrelidge in my mind. If they had no intention of making the car retro in any way, then why would they use a retro moniker? I've been following their desire to bring back the GTO since the 1980's and they decided to keep it buried until 2004. I don't question the car's performance but it has absolutely nothing that stands out from a design perspective. You can't tell it's a GTO from 100 feet. Then just before the end Pontiac comes out with cars named G6, G8, etc. No imagination, no effort, even with naming these vehicles. If corporate GM has this much enthusiasm, how ethusiastic do they think their customers will have? I apologize for the rant. I've been a member of POCI since 1994 and I was raised from the age of 1 in a Pontiac, so I am loyal to them and them alone. But that loyalty remains only with the cars of old. I'm afraid that Pontiac stopped building "Excitement" for me many years ago. Again, I know the G8 and the new GTO's will run circles around the old cars, but I can pick out the old cars from all the others from 100 feet, can't do that today with the new ones other than the Mustang and Challenger...
