I have an issue with my Tranny, I think.

    380,000 kms.

In Drive I am on the highway, going into OD, the Tach will start to fluctuate (bounce up and down)at 2000-2200 rpm. and the car will chugg, until i step on more of the gas and then it is O.K. I also notice the same problem if I am going up a steep incline or hill. It also does this chugging up a hill in 3rd. Gear as well. My mechanic has scanned the car looking for any Transmission error codes, and there never is any. I have done a tune-up as well, plugs, wires, new fuel filter. Still have the issue.

Grand Prix Forum memebers please let me know your thoughts, and any approx. associated costs if you are familiar with this problem.

    Thanks!!

    2000-2200?

Thats not much of a jump.

If it were a spread of 500 it might be the TCC solenoid or possibly your fourth gear hub is stripping.

But because you say its chugging in third as well it can't be the hub.

Alright, here's what will fix it.

Disconnect both battery cables from the battery. Touch the two cables together for about 30 seconds (gets rid of the little charge left), this takes a little effort. Leave the cables off over night. Reconnect the cables in the morning, and your problem will be solved. Post back again once you do this.

    The Chad,

What is your logic behind doing this?? Please let me know your thoughts.

Someone suggested it in the past. And heck it's free. He gave it a try and for some reason it did the trick. Probably reset the pcm or cleared a code in the end. But it fixed the issue for at least one person. Sometimes the oddest sounding things are worth a try when free and if they work, it's worth repeating.

I gotta be honest and say I don't know exactly why it works! It's kind of like the "turning it off and turning it back on" trick that works with so many other things, seems to reset the control. Whatever it is, it's worked with my car about a week ago, and has worked with other GTP owners in the past.

This only seems to work whenever there are no codes present, meaning that there isn't anything worthy of throwing a code. This situation occurs with other vehicles also. I'd like to know in detail why it works, but haven't found anything yet. Does Trannyman know? (... Trannyman is always watching, waiting for the best moment to strike!)

So does that mean that you've tried it yet and it worked?

u can leave it disconnected for 30 minutes to an hour... overnight isnt 100% necessary.

    Ok time to strike lol.

The intention behind unhooking the battery overnight is that the adaptive learns MAY reset in the pcm. This is not always the case, SOME vehicles will take to this while many wont. Often the only way that the adapts can be reset to a starting point is by a complete pcm reflash. A complete reflash of the pcm, speaking in terms of stock applications and dealer info, will reset the adapts and start a new learning curve and this can help correct the condition but it may come back. Many transmission techs have found that a complete rewrite at the dealer will cure this problem most of the time. Keep in mind that the transmission itself could be the culprit also. I have tried this and sometimes it works, sometimes it does not but in most scenarios on a higher mileage transmission it will work ok for a short while and return to its original behavior once the pcm relearns.

    See?! Didn't I tell you that he's always watching? Like a transmission-oriented version of Batman. Nee-ner Nee-ner Nee-ner Nee-ner, Nee-ner Nee-ner Nee-ner Nee-ner, Tranny-man!

Thanks for the assist, Trannyman. GrandPrix Gotham wouldn't be safe without you.

    O.K. Gents,

I did finally try this on the weekend. 2 things.

    1. Wen I unhooked the battery terminals, I attached a wire to both
of them trying to drain any remaining charge. The next day when I hooked everything back up, the radio stations still were able to maintain their pre-sets, and the Oil Change monitor was also not reset. Is there any way to totally eliminate any electrical charge??

    2. When I did hook everything up, the oscillating RPM and the subsequent chugging, did disipate. My thought is since there were no error codes that were associated with this problem after numerous scans of the system, is it possible that this issue was a result of my Tranny Lines blowing months back, and getting them replaced, the computer memory has kept this memory from that time, and that a total flash would be beneficial??

Please let me know your thoughts The Chad, Trannyman95, Billboost37, gtpinsc.

    THANKS!!!

I agree with the transmission expert as to why it may help.

Glad it worked for you. About the charge not completely disipating, my pre-sets and oil life indicator remained as well (the system does not always drain). If the condition returns, as it may, a total flash would be a viable option IMO. Did you say what your mileage is on your GP?
