Can I rebuild my Trans????

Can an average person with mechanical background rebuild a trans? I am pretty mechanical and have pulled motors and done all my own work. I need to pull my current motor and I figured I could replace/rebuild the trans if I can not find a good used one.
Anyway, I saw a dvd on Ebay for 30 bucks or so. If I buy a rebuild kit from triple edge, can I do it myself and is there any special tools you need?
Just wondering if anyone has any expierance with this and about how long it took? Thans.

2000 - 2500.

You dont have to be a pro but it helps. Get an astg manual and read it. There are a couple special tools but a little improv goes a long way.

I've done it, and it's really not that bad. As minichopper said, get the manuals, read them thoroughly. There's a ton of info posted here as well from when Trannyman was more active, it's worth going back through all of the old posts. Research is key.

its doable and theres certain things you can have a local shop do like the teflon seals and a couple other things if im not mistaken

i always thought it was cheaper (read 'saved time') to just swap in another used stock unit and be done with it.

Can not find a lower mileage one around here. Found one with 90K on it for 600. Figured a rebuild would be cheaper and I could learn. The GXP is coming out for the summer so I have time to work on it.

i did mine myself with nothing more then a manual i got on ebay and some goods from triple edge performance and a buddys hand when i needed to align parts.

have confidence my trans is great.

all together i had some damage etc so i was at about 870 or so.

Did you put any performance stuff in.....Harden shafts or anything?

Holy crap joe you got ripped the **** off. Hardened 4th shaft, master rebuild kit, new bushings, new bearings plus rebuilt converter only cost me $400.

Yeah but other things like a new torque converter can throw that up to 800 rather quickly.

Why spend more then you have to? Rebuilt converters are just as good as any other.

throw in chains, valve body fixes/upgrades, fluid, etc and it all adds up. Mine came in around $750 with a rebuilt converter, but that includes buying the transmission.

the only trans ive been in is an allison 1000. those are cake. if been in a ten steed out of a semi. those arent too bad. never done a FWD car before tho.
