First of all I would like to congratulate you guys on a great forum you have here and I look foward to being as much help as I can. I have an 02 GT with a suspected bad 4th gear clutch hub (no fourth gear). I hear you can replace it with the tranny still in the vehicle. Any help on a step by step how to would be great, or would removing the unit be the way to fly? Thank you in advance for your help!

Well as much as you probably dont want to hear it, pulling the tranny is probably the better way to go. However, I do believe it can be done in the car, its just going to be a pain to do so.

I have my front suspension completely pulled (Im getting ready to rebuild my tranny) and looking at it from the drivers side it does appear that if you were able to lower the cradle enough that you would be able to get that side cover off and do the work. Though, again, it probably isnt going to be fun.

Hopefully Trannyman will step in here and advise you further. But I believe his advise may be to just pull the whole tranny as well.

It can be done in the car and this is how quite a few shops will repair this but it is a lot of work to do and more hassel in the car. In the Write-Ups section on this forum there is a thread I started for gear swaps, you essentiall need to follow those instructions inside the trans. Getting to the trans has probably yet to be posted up instruction wise on here but it is a pretty big job if you have never dropped a trans out of one of these cars or ever been inside one of these transmissions.

Thanks Trannyman, I am a Tech, and I own a general repair shop here in Connecticut. I have done numerous swaps but never opened up a 4t65e, other than pans & side covers, for shift solenoids. If you could point me to the location of the 4th gear clutch hub, and a few pointers, I am sure i could handle it

Thanks for adding that link here and that is the one I was referring to. I also sell tech manuals for $20 if you need one and it will have all of the info you will need to do this if in question.
